I installed v3.4  desktop image on RPI5, and it works fine with a DGT board, But I can't get it to work with the Chessnut Air.

I have the usb cable connected to the pi.

The chessnut air works with Chessnut program.

Is there something I need to do other than selecting the eboard in picochess?

Hi Brian,

chessnut eBoards do not connect via usb - only via bluetooth!

So you have to make sure that your eBoard is in bluetooth mode (blue led flashing).

Connection to chessnut is still sometimes "difficult" (we assume because of old bluetooth driver in Raspian for 3.4 images).

Best practice is to switch on the eBoard (WITH active bluetooth) JUST BEFORE PicoChess starts...

At least thats how it works for me with my chessnut eBoards...

If you just can't make it work try resetting the Bluetooth keys in the Chessnut Air: (make sure the Pi is OFF), then, with the board OFF, hold the Chessnut Air power button continuously until it turns ON and eventually turns OFF. Let go of button. Apply power to the Pi and then immediately turn ON the board (this is so the board's Bluetooth doesn't time out before pairing). When PicoChess starts it should connect to the board after a short while. If successful, the next time turn the board ON just before turning on the Pi. If unsuccessful, delete the /var/lib/bluetooth folder on the Pi and reboot, ensuring the board is turned ON and blue LED flashing when PicoChess starts.

I hope someone can update the bluepy module to bluepy3. I think that would solve this issue.

Unfortunately, I also couldn't connect my Chessnut in version 3.4. I followed all the procedures Randy suggested, except for deleting the folder, which I don't know how to do. The strange thing is that version 3.3 connected normally. Waldomiro

Hi Waldomiro,

If you are able to log in to your Pi via SSH or by opening a terminal on the Desktop, you can execute the command:

sudo rm -rf /var/lib/bluetooth

Another option is to flash the image to the SD card again. The bluetooth folder is already removed and gets built on first boot.

Hello Randy,

I was only able to connect my Chessnut by downloading the PicoChess 3.4 image with the fix; the command didn't work for me.

Thank you very much.

Ok. Good. Now, your best chance of connecting consistently to the Chessnut Air is to start the Pi then immediately turn on the board (this just ensures the board led is still flashing blue when PicoChess starts looking for it). From experience, if it doesn't connect, turn both the Pi and the board OFF and start again.
