What the heck happened to my post?

https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/php-fig/utL_wh3x-_s

I just spent half an hour typing this :-(

It looks like it's in the Google Groups review queue. I would look through and approve, but I should've been offline/in bed hours ago. It's not lost though.

It literally said "this post has been deleted", without any explanation - now it's disappeared from the index page as well, and the link is dead.

Seriously, are they doing any maintenance on Google Groups at all? It's just a terrible product :-/

It still says it's deleted... is it waiting for someone to moderate, or has it really been deleted?

Can one of the moderators reply, please?

I hit the "approve post" button and...the post may have vanished into the ether anyway.for some reason. I swear I hit the right button, despite running on 5 hours of sleep...

For what it's worth, it looked like you linked the same code screenshot three times, rather than e.g. linking to commit lines in GitHub or the like, so that's likely why Google tagged your post as spam to start with (which is why it was in the moderation queue).

of course not - I just kept saving over the same screenshot file and uploading it again, but I'm guessing Google Groups just makes it *look* like it has actually uploaded the file, but doesn't actually upload anything until the end.

seriously, Google Groups is a showcase of everything you can do wrong in a web app.

I don't ever want to post here again :-(

Is there a reason why you don't just use it as a mailing list? I never use google groups, fwiw, so I have had 0 problems with it.

I always go to the group first, to see what's ticking, and to search
and see what else has been said about a particular topic before
bringing it up.

It isn't just a mailing list - if it were, I most likely wouldn't use
it at all, I get too much email as it is.

And an email client is likely just as bad at this as the web interface
at Google groups, so.

Why don't we move to something like Flarum that is actually supported
and maintained by the PHP community? And supports markdown, syntax
highlighting, etc. - and doesn't have a 90s UI that makes you want to
cry :-/

I think this would be a reasonable thing to write up a proposal on and ask for a vote.

Switching to a forum, rather than a mailing list, will very likely decrease participation and interest – it's a matter of pull vs push.

(If your email client has a poor interface, I would get a new email client – there are a wealth of options, with features that can help tame a busy inbox.)

I would not propose switching to a forum with email integration that isn't as good or better than that of Google groups.

This should increase participation merely by having a practical, useable, comfy web UI.

It needs to be done properly of course, and shouldn't be a drawback for those who prefer to treat it as a simple maling list :-)

i have created an example with freeflarum service, using the tag extension, posting / replying can be restricted to board members on specific tags such PSR Discussions and RFC.

https://fig.freeflarum.com/

IMO its way much better and more efficient than google groups, the modern UI makes it look more welcoming for people to get involved

I'm sure it has all the moderation and access control features that would be needed - the much bigger question is how to migrate existing messages, that's probably no small task, probably all down to writing some kind of web scraper...

Anyhow, if we were to seriously propose this, we'd need to bring a detailed proposal, I think - it has to address at least migration, mailing list integration, Google login authentication, probably other stuff we haven't thought of yet.

i don't know if google groups provide an API that can be used for migration, however google login extension exist but its disabled by default, there's a lot of interesting extensions that can be used, maybe even develop a php-fig extension to add everything that is missing

Google provides nothing. You can find scrapers in various languages for various boards - one of them might be adaptable, but I haven't seen one for Flarum.

There is a ton of plugins for just about everything else:

i think a proposal should be written for this but i'm not really good at that UwU. so if you would like go for it !

I did receive the initial post as an email... and replied to it...

It looks like the original *was* deleted, but the thread is safely here -- https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/php-fig/wdjT-Orf5XM
