Hi all,

I did my transcription in CHAT and assumed that I should use the %mod line (=target) only when the %pho line (=actual) does not meet the target. Now after moving to Phon, I realized I'll always need both Target and Actual transcriptions (right?).

It will be a pain to go back and fix the %mod lines of all 5 hours of recordings I have :) so If there is any way I can let Phon know that it should take 'Actual IPA' as 'Target IPA' in case 'Actual IPA' is missing, that would save tons of work.

I hope i am making sense.

Many thanks in advance,
Abdel

Hello Abdel,

I've created a script which will copy %pho to %mod when %mod is empty.

1) You may download this script from here: https://gist.github.com/ghedlund/0fc0c5b1b44cf83093cac243a0994087.  Choose 'Download ZIP' and then extract the contents of the downloaded file.

2) In Phon, open your project and select 'Tools -> PhonShell' from the window menu.  From the PhonShell window menu choose 'File -> Run script' and select the file CopyPhoToMod.groovy from step 1.

3) Select the sessions you wish to modify and click 'Ok'.  Once completed you should see 'Done' printed in the window.

Cheers,

-Greg

Hi Greg,

This is so nice of you. I appreciate the effort and I really hope this helps other people in the future. It worked perfectly.

Many thanks

Hi again everyone,

So I realized (as mentioned on the website) that some diacritic combinations cause problems (e.g., length followed by pharyngealization or labialization in my case). On the website manual, it mentions that this might occur depending on the font (I tried to change it a few times but no luck!). This issue impacts my analyses. The words containing such diacritic combinations also disappear when converting back to CHA format. Is there a way to work around this?

Best
Abdel

Dear Abdel,
Could you please send us the types of character strings you have issues with? To do so, please email me at yr...@mun.ca and simply copy/paste examples of this from Phon to your email.

Thank you,
Yvan

Dear Abdel,
Because your examples are not confidential, and because the answer to your question may be useful to more people, I brought back the conversation to the public forum.

In a nutshell, if you put the length mark after the hanging diacritic everything works perfectly. Examples:

rˤzmasakʷː
itˤːar

It's possible that this breaks from transcription standards you have for your language, but I cannot anticipate analytic issues with this approach. We all must remember that transcription standards used for different languages are not always easy or even logical to support in computer programs.

I hope you find this all useful!

Kind regards,
Yvan

Dear Yvan,

Thanks a lot. And I am glad this could be useful to others.
I will try this. And yes, I don't see any problems with switching the position of the two symbols.

Best regards,
Abdel
