To all PFLOTRAN developers,

I would like to offer a perspective on the future trajectory of PFLOTRAN, particularly in light of limited funding scenarios. One of the defining strengths of open-source development lies in its inherent resilience and sustainability, requiring minimal financial support. Its survival and progress often hinge on the collective will and dedication of its contributors.

Years ago, there was an instance where a program manager opted to cease funding for PFLOTRAN's development, favoring the advancement of an alternative computational tool. However, despite this decision, PFLOTRAN persevered and continued to thrive—a testament to its robustness and the unwavering commitment of the community supporting it.

I often liken PFLOTRAN to a cockroach: resilient and tenacious in the face of adversity. Even under challenging conditions, it withstands and flourishes. Yes, I might need to rethink the choice of creature—AI suggested an evergreen tree, but the analogy highlights the enduring nature of open-source initiatives where success is often fueled by passion and collective effort rather than external funding.

Glenn

Full disclosure: Much of the above was re-written by AI once I provided an outline. I am not usually this eloquent.

Long may it thrive - cockroaches notwithstanding!
