The myth of 'rising Asia' & the reality
‘Rising Asia’ now runs like a myth in many Asian and non-Asian countries. But such a myth hides many awful realities. The case of ‘rising Europe’ in the past with its mighty economy, military and technology provides valuable insights to analyse the so-called myth of ‘rising Asia’. While Europe showed its fastest economic growth, it also showed its fastest morale downturn. Because of such moral downturn, Europe could become the fertile breeding ground for evil ideologies like colonialism, imperialism, white supremacism, nationalism, racism and fascism. In fact, genocidal wars, colonial wars, World Wars and ethnic cleansing owe to such a moral downturn. In those rising days of the west, the moral down-turn went so low that it couldn’t find any wrong in the elimination of Red Indians from Americas, aborigines from Australia and Maoris from New Zealand. And, killings could be done on an industrial scale. As a result, they could kill about 75 million people only in the two World Wars. This is why, the worst catastrophe in the whole history is not caused by earthquakes, epidemics, cyclones or tsunamis; but by humans.
The same myth of economic development now dominates the socio-political spectrum of South Asia. The economic development has overruled the importance of moral development. And moral ill health or death now shows its own expression. In India, Muslims are being lynched to death on the alleged accusations that they eat beef. In such a pretext, 25 Muslims are killed by the Hindu radicals in a period from 2015 to the middle of 2017. (Ananda Bazar Patrika, 2020). In 1992, more than 500-year-old historical Babri Mosque in Ayodhya was razed to the ground on a mythological assumption that Ram –a Hindu deity was born there. The Supreme Court of India declared in its recent judgment that there exists no evidence that the mosque was built on a Hindu temple. Surprisingly, the absence of evidence couldn’t prohibit the Supreme Court judges from incorporating the Hindutva motive in their judgment. Therefore, the judges gave the dismantled mosque site to the perpetrators of the crime to build a temple there! Whereas in a previous ruling, the same judiciary condemned the destruction of the mosque as a heinous crime. Therefore, with the Hindutva fascists in power, everything looks changed. The police, the prosecution, the Hindutva politician, the judiciary, the media and the executive branch of the government now work together to promote the same Hindutva objective. Now, the appeasement of the ruling Hindutva forces overrules the delivery of fair justice.
The Muslim population of India is about 200 million –larger than the combined population of France, Germany, and the UK. The development of a state is indeed the aggregate development of all people of all denominations. Hence hindered access to education and training, employment opportunities for everyone and optimum utilization of every talent and skills are vital. Any obstruction or exclusion of anyone restricts development. The GDP of the country is indeed the summation of added values not only on land and materials but also on every individual. Therefore, if 200 million people are kept out of the value-adding process and employment, how can a country progress? Awfully such a basic rule of development is ignored only to harm Muslims. They also ignore to realize that such a policy immensely harms India. The impact reflects on the economic indicators. In terms of per capita income and hunger index, India stands lower than even Bangladesh –the bottomless basket case of the early seventies.
Currently, Muslims constitute about 15 percent of the Indian population; but only 4 percent of them are graduate and only 5 percent are in the government jobs. (Sachar Committee Report, 2006). The maximization of the economic wellbeing of the Hindus and their access to the government offices are being achieved and sustained by maximum deprivation or exclusion of the Muslims. Such a discriminatory and restrictive policy was first initiated by the British colonial occupiers since they snatched power from the Muslim rulers. But it hasn’t been changed by the subsequent Indian governments. Now, with the Hindutva forces in power, the exclusion of the Muslims has become overt government policy. More than 44 million Muslims live in Uttar Pradesh –the country’s largest province, but in the 2014 election, not a single Muslim was allowed to sit in the parliament. It is also worth noting that the Hindutva forces are not happy with the current level of exclusion, they want to put more restrictions. In order to put permanent prohibition, they want to deprive Muslims of their citizenship rights. So, tools like National Citizenship Registrar (NCR) and the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) are introduced. BJP’s West Bengal chief told in public that 10 million Muslims will be evicted from West Bengal by deploying NCR. (Ananda Bazar Patrika, 17 February 2020). Millions of Muslims are targeted to make them stateless on the accusation that they have illegally infiltrated from Bangladesh. Bangladesh has already labelled it baseless and has expressed its refusal to take any stateless people from India. Hence such stateless Muslims face no option but to stand de-enfranchised and dumped in concentration camps. Already such concentration camps are being constructed in the state of Assam where 1.9 million people stand stateless because of exclusion from NRC. Such an inhuman act stands unique in the whole human history.
The Hindutva fascists want to make India a Hindu state –as envisioned by their guru Savarkar. Muslims and other minorities will survive only as second class citizens without any social, political and economic participation. This is why even the publication of the Sachar Committee Report that exposed sheer deprivation of the Muslims is so unwelcome in the Hindutva circle. Their argument is clear. While they do not bother to alleviate the deprivation, why do they need its publication? The Muslim rule in India in the past is being used to ignite the politics of revengeful anguish against the present days’ Muslims. In fact, the resurgence of such Hindu vengeance forms the basis of Hindutva politics in India and gave birth to the world’s largest NGO called Rashtriya Shevok Sangha (RSS). The sole objective of RSS is to make India a Hindu state.-(Andersen, Walter; Damla, Shridhar, 1987). In the early days of independent India, RSS leaders opposed the Indian constitution for three main reasons. These are 1). Its secular character, 2). Non-inclusion of the ancient law of Manu, 3). Equal rights for people of all clasts and religions. (Hadiz, Vedi). They also opposed the tri-color Indian national flag. Instead, they wanted a saffron flag as an icon of ancient Hindu identity. For 52 years since independence, they didn’t hoist tri-color Indian national flag in RSS headquarter; for the first time they did it in 2002. (The Times of India, 2002).
While M.S Golwalker became the RSS President in 1940, he set it a goal not to fight against the British. (M.S Golwalker, 1974). Muslims were stipulated as the number one enemy and not the British occupation. Hence, from day one of its inception in 1925, RSS was focussed on mobilizing and strengthening the Hindutva recruits to fight against the Muslims. In 1927, within two years of its creation, the RSS launched its first Muslim cleansing operation in its birthplace in Nagpur in Maharashtra. Its militants launched an organized attack against the local Muslims and the campaign went on for 3 days and forced the Muslims to leave the city. The creation of Pakistan in 1947 infuriated the RSS cadres; as if Pakistan has cut into pieces their mother India. Now they take revenge from the captivated Muslims who didn’t migrate to Pakistan. They consider every Indian Muslim a traitor cum termite and a Pakistani insider. (Ashish Nandi, 2002). For its terrorist activities, the RSS was banned 4 times in the past: in 1947, in 1948, in 1975 and in 1992. During British raj, it was banned for its communal terrorism by the provincial government of Punjab in 1947. In 1948, it was banned for killing Gandhi. In 1992, it was banned for destroying the historic Babri Mosque. Since Narendra Modi -a lifelong member of RSS, became the Prime Minister, everything changed. The RSS is no more alone in its mission; the whole state apparatus, the media, the police, and the army are now working hand in hand to attain the Hindutva objective. The policy of political and economic exclusivity and even cleansing operations against the religious minorities gets sanitized in the name of the democratic rights of the majority. Thus, the Hindutva majority has established marginalization of the minorities and deprivation of their basic rights as the new normal.
The NRC project was first started in the north-eastern state of Assam. Because of it, 1.9 million people became stateless. Contrary to the Hindutva expectation, more than 70% of the victims turned out to be Hindus. Since exclusion of Hindus has never been the agenda of the ruling Hindutva extremists, the Citizenship Act was quickly amended to award them citizenship. But the door is kept closed for the stateless Muslims. A Hindu –even if born outside India, can get citizenship because of his religious identity, but a Muslim born in India needs to submit documents for that. Thus, NRC and CAA are being used as the discriminatory instruments against Muslims either to evict them as a foreign intruder or dump them in newly built concentration camps as de-enfranchised and de-humanized alien creatures.
The cross-party epidemic
Like a virus, toxic ideologies never stay confined within the premise of a single political, religious or terrorist outfit. It shows a cross-party, cross-country and cross-border epidemic. Hence, what is happening in India, Myanmar and Sri Lanka against the Muslims shows similar symptoms and signs. This is why, the anti-Muslim hatred in Indian politics is not a monopoly of the RSS-BJP axis, and the parties like the Indian National Congress and many others have also been infected with the same toxicity. The spell of the Hindutva venom over the politics of the Indian National Congress was exposed during the election campaign of 1989. To appease the Hindu voters, Rajiv Gandhi –the Congress Party’s incumbent Prime Minister attempted to snatch the Hindutva mantra from the RSS-BJP family by outplaying the issue. He started his campaign from the district of Faizabad –known for its historic Babri Mosque. Dispelling the previous secular stand of the Congress, Rajiv Gandhi took the banner of the Hindutva agenda in his own hand. He promised inauguration of Rama Rajya –the rule and the kingdom of Rama, in India.-(Pradeep Nayak, 1993). It was a clear departure from the declared secular ideology of the Congress. He even opened the door of the Babri Mosque for the Hindu worshippers –which was strategically avoided by every Congress and non-Congress government in the past. By adopting such a communal agenda, Rajiv Gandhi enhanced Hindutva radicalization of his own party the Indian National Congress. He preferred getting more votes over higher human values, secular ideology, justice and respect for the minority rights. Such a policy of sliding towards the Hindu majority vote bank and turning a blind eye towards the Muslim minority prompted the Muslims –the party’s traditional vote bank to quickly leave Congress. Along with the loss of Muslim votes, his hoax to amass Hindu votes didn’t work either. He failed to defeat the old and original vanguards of the Hindutva outfit like BJP. As a result of losing Muslim votes, the Congress Party ceased to exist as an electable contender of power in Indian national politics. It could show up only as a partner of regional parties to share power in some smaller states.
However, Rajiv Gandhi is not the only Congress leader to embrace the Hindutva ideology. Even, Mr. Nehru -the first Prime Minister of independent India didn’t prove different either. Nehru couldn’t hide his affinity towards Hindutva extremism while he embraced Shamya Prasad Mukherjee as his first post-independence cabinet colleague. Incorporating a leader in the cabinet doesn’t go alone, it needs to accommodate his ideologies, too. Mr. Mukherjee is known as one of the most original gurus of Hindutva radicalization of Indian politics. He was the former President of Hindu Mahashava and the founder of Jana Sangha –the parental organizations of today’s BJP.
Nehru’s policy towards the Muslim rule in Hyderabad and the Muslim population in Kashmir –the only Muslim majority state in India, also proved terribly sinister. The first post-independence genocidal massacre of the Muslims that took place in Hyderabad in 1948 wasn’t the crime of RSS-BJP goons. It happened under the watch of Congress Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. His government didn’t bother to do a body count of the dead. The lowest estimate of Muslim death has been reported to be 40, 000 (Komireddi, 2019). In another estimate, it is 200, 000. (Noorani, 2001). Muslim houses were looted and thousands of Muslim women were raped. Thugs and rapists were let loose to commit the crime, and hardly anyone was punished for such a horrendous crime.
Under Nehru’s rule, a massive genocide also took place in Jammu –a southern district in united Kashmir. Prior to Indian occupation in 1947, Jammu had a Muslim majority population. The genocide was carried out under the direct command of Dogra Maharaja Hari Singh of Kashmir -as a part of the desperate move in his last days of rule, to make it Hindu majority area. Since there was no body-count, there exists gross variation on number of the death. It is stated 20,000 to 100,000 Muslims were killed and many more were evicted from their home. (Snedden, Christopher, 2015). But most of the researchers agree that RSS cadres were brought in to conduct the genocide under the direct watch of Maharaja Hari Singh. (Chattha, 2009). Although Prime Minister Nehru considered Hari Singh guilty for the massacre but gave him a safe sanctuary in Mumbai. (Praveen Swami, 2007). Because of signing the ‘Instrument of Accession to India’, Hari Singh has not only been exempted from legal prosecution but also his genocidal crime was airbrushed from history. (Komireddi, 2019).
Mr. Narasima Rao -Congress Party’s another former Prime Minister also showed anti-Muslim sentiment from his early career. He joined an armed group to fight against the Muslim ruler in Hyderabad. (K.S. Komireddi, 2019). While he was the Prime Minister, he allowed the destruction of the Babri Mosque by his visible inaction. His government showed utter failure to prosecute those Hindutva extremists who committed such a heinous crime. Mr. Pronab Mukherjee –a former President of India and leader of the Congress Party also couldn’t hide his affinity towards RSS. He visited Nagpur –the birthplace of RSS, to pay his deep homage to the RSS founder Mr. Hedgewar in 2018. The issue didn’t stop at his homage; Mr. Mukherjee exulted the RSS founder as “great son of Mother India” in the visitor’s book. Only a man with the full endorsement of Mr. Hedgewar’s Hindutva ideology could write such a high eulogy. On behalf of RSS, it was acknowledged that after Mr. Pronab Mukherjee’s homage to Hedgewar, there was an upsurge in RSS’s membership. It is worth noting that Mr. Pronab Mukherjee is not alone to show the affinity to Hindutva ideology. Congress Party –the so-called secularist outfit proved to be embedded with many more like Mr. Mukharjee. In 1954, a Congress MP named Seth Govind Das moved a resolution in the Indian parliament for imposing a total ban on cow slaughter. Mr. Vasan Sathe -another leading Hindutva fan in Congress, threatened to resign from the party if the party opposes the installation of a portrait of Mr. Savarkar –the original guru of Hindutva politics in India, in the parliament. (Naqvi, 2019).
Mr. Hedgewar’s ideology and his political objective were never hidden. Mr. Hedgewar proclaimed that India is a country only for the Hindus, and consistently loathed the Muslims. He could never swallow the six hundred years’ Muslim rule in India. He considered Muslims’ rule as a disgrace for the Hindus, and showed his obsession to take the revenge. Like Savarkar, Golwalker and other Hindutva ideologues, he couldn’t think of Muslims as equal citizens. His obsession to take revenge prompted him to form the RSS. His successor Golwalkar was an admirer of Hitler and his policies towards the Jews. He even wrote that Nazi Germany provides a “good lesson for us in Hindustan to learn and profit by.” In such writings, Golwalkar’s implied message is clear. The Germans had the Jews and the Indians have the Muslims. Hitler had nothing to teach Indians on Hindutva ideology but had a lot to teach how to carry out genocidal cleansing of the Muslims –as he did against the Jews. Hitler could also teach how he was successful to mobilize and motivate the German people to commit one of the ugliest crimes on earth like taking Jews to the gas chambers. Mr. Golwalkar was highly impressed by Hitler’s quick success; hence asked his Hindu compatriots to apply the same methodology against the Indian Muslims. How a man with an iota of morality can endorse or appreciate such a toxic ideology? But Mr. Pronab Mukharjee travelled to Nagpur to pay homage to the icon of such ideology. A Muslim can easily understand how dreadful to live amidst hordes of such indoctrinated people. In a conventional war, fear of death runs only through those who are on the battlefield. But for Muslims, the whole of India had turned into a fear-mongering corrosive battlefield.
Deployment of more than 700,000 troops in Kashmir –the only Muslim majority state in India, tells another story of on-going marginalization and persecution of the minority in India. Kashmir is now the most militarized zone in the whole world. Because of the recent abrogation of Article 370, Kashmir nor more exist as a state; it has become a federal territory directly under the rule of Delhi. The whole state has turned into a prison. As a part of the punitive measures, curfew has been imposed for months after months. To disconnect them from the outside world, internet services are either cut-off or given restricted access. Thousands of people are taken to prisons outside Kashmir. Such state-run killing, oppression, injustices, and marginalization only could work as the precursor of social unrest and militancy among the victims. As usual, such state-run terrorism gets cover-up in the name of keeping stability and fighting the militancy. Because of the similar punitive policy of the Myanmar government against the minority Rohingya Muslims, the country could become the “textbook case of ethnic cleansing”. The situation in Sri Lanka is not different either; it only differs in severity from that of India and Myanmar. There too, the Muslim and Tamil minority suffer in the hand of the Buddhist Sinhalese majority.
All RSS compounds in India indeed work as training centers to make the party cadres ready for a Hindutva victory over the whole of South Asia. The division of the subcontinent into India, Pakistan and Bangladesh has never been accepted by them; Gandhi –the father of India’s independence was murdered for accepting the division. The map that is displayed in the RSS central office in Nagpur doesn’t show Pakistan and Bangladesh. (Al Jazeera English documentary). Accepting the RSS project to make India a Hindu state is projected as a marker of patriotism. Failing to fall in line with such an RSS vision is labeled as a Pakistani insider; and gets subjected to public lynching, rape, torture and mass slaughter on streets and also in domestic premises.
Muslims aren’t the only target
Muslims are not the only target of the Hindutva fascists. Non-Hindus like Sikhs, Christians and the untouchables also become the victims. What happened in Delhi in 1984 in the aftermath of the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi is indeed an organized slaughter of Sikh men, women, and children abetted by the state. By official estimate, 3,000 Sikhs were murdered. The unofficial figure is much higher. Surprisingly, the Government ruled by Congress didn’t intervene –as was the case in 2002 in an anti-Muslim pogrom in Gujrat under Modi’s watch. Two weeks later Rajiv Gandhi used a clarifying metaphor: when a big tree falls, the earth shakes a little. (Komireddi, 2019). The bloodbath of Sikhs appeased the Hindutva radicals so much that in the 1984 election, the Hindutva activists like RSS cadres campaigned for Rajiv Gandhi. He was elected with 416 out of 543 seats in the parliaments. It was indeed one of the greatest electoral victories in the history of the Indian National Congress. So, it ratifies the reality that if politics gets polarised with vitriolic hatred and massacre against minorities, it brings landslide electoral victory to the perpetrators. In a milieu of such ideological intoxication, perpetrators of innocent men, women, and children of the minority community never get prosecuted; rather receive honour with electoral triumph. In fact, Mr. Narendra Modi and his party BJP are the perfect examples of that. Because of the heinous atrocities against the minorities in Gujrat, Muzaffarnagar and other parts of India, Mr. Modi and his BJP could quickly jump up in the popularity ladder. In such politics of populism, higher values or principle doesn’t work. This is why it is the political strategy of the extremist forces to invent more pretexts to scale up atrocities against the minority. In Kandhamal in Orissa, Dalit converts to Christianity were the target of two and a half months of violence that left at least 16 dead and 40, 000 driven out of their homes. (The Hindu, 2008). It is worth mentioning, that Christians were persecuted even by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru in his early days of rule. He authorized the bombing of the north-eastern Christians majority state of Nagaland for demanding the same independence that India got from the British. (Komireddi, 2019).
Right to rule as if the right to murder
The appointment of Mr. Narendra Modi as the chief minister of Gujrat tells a lot about the political objective of the Hindutva forces in India. He was groomed as an obedient RSS cadre. To give more time and commitment to the Hindutva mission, he even left his newly married wife. In 1992, he played a key role in mobilizing the RSS cadres to destroy the Babri mosque. Such a role enhanced his credentials among the key stakeholders of the party. In early October 2001, Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee summoned Narendra Modi to his residence and offered him the chief minister’s job of Gujrat.-(K.S. Komireddi, 2019).
Mr. Vajpayee is usually projected as a moderate leader in the RSS-BJP camp. But how a moderate man can be compatible with an extremist man who could engineer the destruction of a mosque? People of opposite intentions and ideologies can never work together. They need an ideological match. Later on, Modi as a chief minister of Gujrat revealed not only his own colour but also the colour of Mr. Vajpayee. That moment came within 4 months of his appointment. In 2002, a train carrying Hindu extremists returning from the site of demolished Babri mosque caught fire. Fifty-eight people were burned to death. Mr. Narendra Modi didn’t wait for the police inquiry, rather grab it as an opportunity to do what he wanted to do. He instantly called it the work of the Muslim extremists. Modi’s announcement was enough to incite a genocidal massacre against the innocent Muslims in Gujrat. In one Muslim neighbourhood, a mob of about five-thousands Hindus made their way through a slum and hacked ninety-seven Muslims to death and a mosque was blown up with liquefied petroleum. Across the road from the scene of carnage, stood a reserve police quarters. But no one from there lifted a finger. (Human Rights Watch, 2002). In a civilized country, police reach within minutes if a house is under attack by a killer or robber. But Modi proved that India hasn’t reached to that stage. Under his rule, the state of Gujrat turned into a deep and distant jungle; no police appears in the site of carnage -not in hours, and not even in days. So the killing, the mass rape, and the arson continue unabated. Thus, as a chief minister, Modi showed his own complicity in the crime. He need not kill or rape anybody himself; but his robust inaction worked as a huge encouragement for the killers, the rapists, and the arsonists to commit such crimes in thousands.
In an anti-Muslim pogrom, the social position or contribution of a Muslim makes no difference to make him the worst victim. Mr. Ehsan Jafri -a former MP of Indian Parliament, was a very prominent Muslim leader of Gujarat. He had close acquaintance with Sonia Gandhi –the leader of Congress and personally known to Prime Minister Mr. Vajpayee. Mr. Jafri was sheltering about 250 helpless Muslims in his residence. He spent hours making desperate calls to Chief Minister Modi’s office but received no help. Modi turned deaf. In the end, he urged the attackers, “Whatever you want to do with me, do it; but please don’t kill those who have taken shelter in my house.” But his appeal fell on deaf ears. Mr. Jafri was dragged out of his house by the Hindu mob, tortured with all possible cruelty and sliced open with swords. In the end, he was burnt alive. Sixty-nine people of those who were seeking refuge inside Jafri’s house were killed in broad daylight over seven hours. But during the long period of seven hours, the state police didn’t bother to show up in the scene to stop this preventable massacre. (Vinod Jose, 2012).
The calamities of unequal development
Social, political and economic calamities in South Asia also owe to the highly unequal development of people and society. Indicators like per capita income, GDP (Gross Domestic Product), life expectancy and purchasing power of the people can’t capture information on all indispensable elements of inclusive development. The issues like moral and spiritual development, crime prevalence, per capita feeling of peace and sense of security, per capita access or deprivation of social, educational, economic and democratic rights, rule of law, state of access to the judiciary, and the state of persecution, deprivation, and marginalization of the weaker community still stay out of the focus. In fact, the UNDP’s indicators like life expectancy, education, and purchasing power parity appear more narrow and restrictive to reveal any real state of the people. How one can give an estimate of human development without a proper estimate of the development of humans in humane parameters. The highest importance is given to the security of the state, economic prosperity, infrastructural development and purchasing power of the people. As a result, moral failures like the state-run policy of discrimination, persecution, deprivation, fascism, concentration camps and even genocide against minorities stand unrecorded in a maze of so-called economic development. India is labelled as an economic tiger, but the basic human rights of millions that are consumed by these tigers stay ignored and unrecorded. Robbery, thievery, and persecution against other people can’t be labelled as economic work. Similarly, development at the cost of deprivation of others can’t be called real development either. Such asymmetrical and unjust developmental priorities were first seen in Europe and proved catastrophic for the whole of mankind. Because of wrong parameters, lethal ideologies like racism, nationalism, fascism, colonialism, imperialism and the projects like ethnic cleansing, the lynching of the minorities, slave trading, colonial wars, World Wars could find foot-soldiers to carry out the vicious plans.
It is true that the South Asian countries have made some economic progress. But the newly gained economic strength is enhancing the political ability of the ruling elite to execute their evil agenda. The fascists always thrive on political polarisation based on hatred against the people of other faith, land, and ethnicity. The multi-ethnic and multi-religious demography in India, Myanmar and Sri Lanka prove fertile for such polarisation. The majoritarian fascists could easily label a people of dissimilar ethnicity or religion as the enemy to perpetrate massacres. The German fascists could put a tag on the Jews fit for gas chambers. The fascists of India, Myanmar, and Sri Lanka could also put a tag on Muslims for discrimination, persecution, and elimination. The ethnic cleansing of the Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar, lynching and genocidal massacre of Muslims in India and attacks on the lives and properties of the Muslims in Sri Lanka tell a lot about the horrors that are being inflicted on the minorities in South Asia. In a hype of Islamophobia, such crimes usually get sanitized, belittled or ignored by the global players only to promote their business interests. Therefore the travel ban on Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India for alleged complicity in the massacre of about 2,000 – 5000 Muslims couldn’t survive long. It was lifted by the USA and the EU, and his evil motive was ignored and sanitized to access a market of about 1.3 billion Indians. In such a permissive and opportunistic world-order, China could construct the largest concentration camp on the planet for more than a million Uighur Muslims. So-called rising Asia indeed moving fast to that end.
Conclusion
The fate of a people is not decided by mere economics; rather more decisively by dominant ideologies. While two World Wars caused terrible havoc on earth, the economy wasn’t bad either. The persecution of people and peace can’t go together. Therefore, toxic ideologies like fascism, racism, must nationalism, colonialism and imperialism that promote the persecution of people must not exist anywhere on earth. Otherwise, the peaceful co-existence of people with diversity becomes impossible. Then, war may not be on the frontiers but enters into cities, villages, and houses to kill innocent men, women, and children. Because of Hindutva fascists in India, military racists in Myanmar, power-grabbing fascists in Bangladesh and ethnoreligious opportunists in Sri Lanka such wars have already done great damage against the prospect of peace in South Asia. It is indeed a huge humanitarian as well as social science issue. The economy can’t fight toxic ideologies; it needs an ideological fix. A strong economy can even strengthen the lethal power of evil ideologues –as German’s strong economy did to fascist Hitler. It is indeed the most important responsibility of the social scientists to bring social pathology to the limelight so that the political activists, the social engineers, and the reformist philosophers can take cues to make an appropriate treatment plan. Only this way the growth and sustenance of human civilization can be influenced positively. Otherwise, in this global village, the peaceful co-existence of people with pluralities will survive only as a dream.

Eyewitness account: Delhi Police beat up wounded riot victims, said ‘if he dies, he dies’

Police personnel in Delhi beat up two wounded riot victims, poked at an unconscious person with a baton, and a woman constable said she would not mind if any of the injured died for “our people are also dying”, a dentist has told The Telegraph in an eyewitness account.
The account was shared with this newspaper a day after it emerged that a 23-year-old injured man seen lying on the ground with four others — some of whom were beaten with sticks, kicked and made to sing the national anthem by men in police uniforms — had died.
Faizan, who died on Thursday, and the other four were shown in a video as being beaten by the police and asked to sing the national anthem as they lay wounded on a northeast Delhi street on Monday.
The fact-checking portal, Alt.News, has said it has verified the video with the help of a second video — a view of the same incident from an elevated location — in which a man is heard in the background condemning the police brutality.
The two videos and the dentist’s account have bolstered allegations of police brutality during the riots. On Saturday, Delhi police spokesperson M.S. Randhawa failed to respond to phone calls and a text message sent to him about the allegations of police brutality.
Dentist Meraj bin Ekram said he was accompanying three injured men from the Al Hind Hospital, a nursing home in northeast Delhi where he works, to the better equipped Guru Tegh Bahadur Hospital on Monday.
Two of the patients, with head injuries and in bandages, were travelling in an auto-rickshaw with him while the third, who was unconscious, was being wheeled on a stretcher trolley.
This was because mobs and police roadblocks had prevented ambulances from reaching Al Hind. (The first ambulance reached Al Hind only around 1am on Wednesday after a Delhi High Court directive to the police during a midnight hearing.)
Ekram had hoped the police would let the auto and the trolley through the roadblock. But they were stopped at a barricade near Brijpuri.
From among the dozens of police personnel at the barricade, the dentist said, four men in flak jackets, jeans and sports shoes approached the auto. They asked the two injured men to show their ID cards, accused them of rioting and ordered them off the three-wheeler.
One of the men used a stick to prod the unconscious man on the stretcher to see “if he was dead or alive”. Ekram said he intervened and said that if the patient was handled in such a manner, he could die.
He said he heard a woman constable reply: “If he dies, he dies. Our people are also dying.”
The driver of an ambulance parked nearby on the other side of the barricade then offered to carry the unconscious man to the GTB Hospital, Ekram said.
By then, the police were beating the other two injured with batons, Ekram said. “I was scared; I fled,” he said. “I don’t know what happened to the two injured men who were being beaten.”
Ekram added: “This is the truth. If I have to face consequences for telling the truth, I will.”
The close-shot video depicting the plight of Faizan, the man who died, shows five injured men on the ground, one of them bleeding, trying to sing segments of the national anthem. A policeman is heard saying: “Achchhi tarah ga (Sing it properly).”
The other video — 45 seconds of footage shot from a rooftop and posted on Alt.News — at one point shows a policeman kick one of the men lying on the ground. A man’s voice is heard in the background saying: “This is not Delhi police, they’re RSS goondas.”
Faizan’s family has alleged that he and the other men in the video were taken into police custody and beaten.
“He was beaten with iron rods. His legs were broken. His entire body had turned black because of the beatings. First, he was beaten on the road (and then after) the police took him away,” Faizan’s mother told NDTV.
The family had taken Faizan to a local doctor after the police released him on Tuesday. The doctor, Khaliq Ahmed Sherwani, told the television channel that Faizan’s blood pressure and pulse were low and he appeared to have suffered head injuries and internal injuries.
Faizan died at the GTB Hospital where many of the injured riot victims have been taken, the channel said.

You wouldn’t be surprised if this was a speech given by Vladimir Putin or Bashar Assad. But this isn’t a quote from the Kremlin or Damascus. It part of a speech by a member of the U.S. Congress who’s joined the running to be selected as the Democratic Party’s presidential nominee: Tulsi Gabbard.
U.S. politicians criticizing imperialist U.S. foreign policy interventions, this time in the Middle East, and helpfully excluding other major world powers’ own interventions, is exactly the message Russia seeks to amplify through its propaganda channels. On cue, Russia's 24 hour English news channel, RT, serially posted Gabbard’s video clip on their YouTube channel with the headline that read: "Speeches that still matter: Rep Gabbard on bringing an end to U.S. interventionism."
Was Gabbard’s speech a genuinely passionate plea on humanitarian grounds, to the powers that be, to end the humanitarian crisis in Yemen? Or was it carefully constructed political opportunism? One clear way to triangulate the authenticity of her call would be to test how consistently Gabbard has called out state-led humanitarian crises and deaths around the world.
The death and destruction in Yemen, Syria, Iraq and elsewhere is heartbreaking. It’s difficult for any conscientious human being to be insensitive to grotesque acts of war where civilians are bombed or gassed to death. But what is perplexing is Tulsi’s selective geographic umbrage on this issue.
On the one hand, she condemns the Saudi-U.S. led coalition as complicit in a genocidal war, but she welcomes India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has been called the "man with a massacre on his hands" with open arms.

Some background: In 2002, Modi was chief minister of the Indian state of Gujarat when fire broke out in a train full of Hindu pilgrims. This is how The Guardian’s Aditya Chakrabortty describes what followed:
"Within hours and without a shred of evidence, Modi declared that the Pakistani secret services had been to blame; he then had the charred bodies paraded in the main city of Ahmedabad; and let his own party support a state-wide strike for three days.
"What followed was mass bloodshed: 1,000 dead on official estimates, more than 2,000 by independent tallies. The vast majority of those who died were Muslim. Mobs of men dragged women and young girls out of their homes and raped them…One [of the ringleaders] boasted of how he slit open the womb of a pregnant woman."
There were clear signs that the attackers benefitted from state-level support. The attackers, armed with swords, machetes or iron bars, carried computer print-outs listing the addresses of Muslim families, shops and businesses, according to a report in The Telegraph.

Across Gujarat, 180 mosques were destroyed or damaged along with thousands of Muslim-owned businesses and homes. Callers to police stations were told: "We don't have orders to save you," and "We cannot help you, we have orders from above." Survivors called for this to be recognized not by the over-used term of ‘intercommunal riots’ but rather a pogrom, or attempted genocide.
The U.S. government’s belief in Modi’s complicity was clear when it rejected his request for a U.S. visa in 2005, by which time he had become leader of India’s nationalist Bharatiya Janata party (BJP). He was excluded under a provision of the Immigration and Nationality Act that "makes any government official who was responsible for or directly carried out at any time particularly severe violations of religious freedom ineligible for a visa."
President Obama overturned the visa ban in 2016. India’s courts have exonerated Modi. He has, on numerous occasions, says he has "moved on." But the ghosts of Gujarat haven’t moved anywhere.
Tulsi Gabbard has an exceptional appreciation for Modi.
Hers is a very personal rapport. She presented him with her own copy of the Bhagavad-Gita, on which she took her Congressional oath of office, when he visited the U.S. Modi sent her with "a beautiful message of Krishna" for her wedding. Gabbard then presented him with a CD of music from her wedding.
Upon Mr Modi’s invitation, she took a trip to India where she was widely regarded as the "darling of the BJP and the RSS" – the RSS (a right-wing, Hindu nationalist, paramilitary volunteer organization) being the BJP’s ideological "parent." Both groups, which wield enormous power in India, take pride in a narrow, chauvinistic view of India as a Hindu country where Muslims and other minorities should be considered second-class citizens.

Such was her affinity that Tulsi opposed House Resolution 417 - "Praising India’s rich religious diversity and commitment to tolerance and equality, and reaffirming the need to protect the rights and freedoms of religious minorities" - that was seen as a veiled criticism of Modi. She even tried to brush away the Gujarat pogrom by saying, "There was a lot of misinformation that surrounded the event in 2002."
When it comes to Modi, Gabbard seems to have no pangs of conscience about "destruction, death and suffering" and comfortably wipes the blood off the hands of those complicit in murder.
Why would Tulsi Gabbard damn what she sees as America’s complicity in Yemen but embrace an authoritarian foreign leader with blood on his hands? Why does she openly support and endorse Modi’s poor track record on human rights? What distinction does Gabbard draw between the thousands of Muslims massacred in Gujarat and the thousands of Muslims who died in Yemen? Why isn’t she making a similarly passionate plea to Prime Minister Modi to stop the ongoing mob lynchings and rapes in India?
One obvious reason she won’t do that is the financial and electoral benefits she accrues from openly supporting Modi. By displaying her carefully cultivated public support for Modi, she has won the support of many Indian Americans - particularly those with links to the RSS - by flaunting her 'loyal' Hindu identity.

Though not of Indian origin, Gabbard has been warmly embraced by pro-Modi elements of the Hindu-American diaspora in the U.S., many of whom came forward and donated generously to her campaign. According to The Intercept, "Nearly one-third of Gabbard’s overall donations - $1.24 million - came from more than 800 individual donors with names…of Hindu origin, many of whom made repeat donations."
It’s not just the Hindu right who love Gabbard. America’s resurgent hard and far right agrees, not least because she was an outspoken critic of the Obama administration’s alleged reluctance to recognize that "Islamic extremists are our enemy."
Steve Bannon "loves Tulsi Gabbard." He thinks she "gets the foreign policy stuff, the Islamic terrorism stuff." Tucker Carlson loves her Assad-as-genocidaire skepticism, David Duke loves how she’s realigning U.S. politics, and Richard Spencer lauds her "bravery" in the diplomatic field.
Her own aunt, Caroline Sinavaiana Gabbard, has noted her discomfort with this mixed bag of endorsements, in low-key language: Gabbard "has a notably mixed voting record, and associations that veer from certain progressive causes to the apparent courting of strongmen such as Narendra Modi, Bashar al-Assad, and Abdel Fattah el-Sisi (not to mention Trump) - this zigzagging path through positions is vexing."

Bannon was so impressed with Gabbard as a potential ally that as he brokered a meeting between her and the newly-installed President Donald Trump. Tulsi jumped at the opportunity: in her own words, "I walked out thinking that there may be some opportunity to work with this administration to shift our foreign policy in a more positive, less destructive direction."
Amongst other obvious obstacles to a Democratic congresswomen freelancing coordination with the White House, her dream of a foreign policy "shift" getting a presidential stamp burst when she went to Damascus, met Bashar Assad, and claimed that she was "skeptical" of claims that Assad’s government was to blame for Syria’s genocide.
Those Assad apologetics are rightly one reason why Gabbard’s once-rising-star among Democrats is stalling. But her pro-Modi apologetics, far less examined and far more seldom interrogated in the U.S. media, should have been just as good a reason to repudiate her candidacy.

শুধু ‘রীতিমত নভেল’ই নয়। রবীন্দ্রনাথ তার ‘সমস্যা’ ‘পুরান’, ‘দুরাশা’ ও ‘কাবুলীওয়ালা’ গল্পে মুসলমানদের জারজ, চোর, খুনি ওঅবৈধ প্রণয় আকাঙ্খিণী হিসেবে উপস্থাপন করেছে।
মুসলমানদের সম্পর্কে রবীন্দ্রনাথের কি দৃষ্টিভঙ্গি ছিল, ইসলামসম্পর্কে কতটা গভীর বিদ্বেষ ছিল, রবীন্দ্র সাহিত্য বিশ্লেষণে এসবেরপ্রমাণ এন্তার (২)
এ অভ্যাস ওদের দীর্ঘদিনের
এ অভ্যাস ওদের আদি ও অভয়ক্রম।
মুসলমানদেরকে অশ্লীল অশ্রাব্য ভাষায় গালি প্রদান এবং মুসলমানদের প্রতি মিথ্যা কালিমালেপনের নিকৃষ্ট নজির স্থাপন করেছে। বঙ্কিমচন্দ্র, ঈশ্বরচন্দ্র, নবীনচন্দ্র, রঙ্গলাল, হেমচন্দ্র, দীনবন্ধুমিত্র, দামোদর মুখোপাধ্যায়, থেকে খোদ রবীন্দ্রনাথসহ সব হিন্দু কবি-সাহিত্যিকই।
বাংলা সাহিত্যে এসব হিন্দু কবি-সাহিত্যিকদের ঘৃণ্য সাম্প্রদায়িকতা ও চরম বিদ্বেষের শিকারহয়েছেন মুসলমানরা।
বঙ্কিমচন্দ্র তার শেখা প্রায় সবকটি গালি ‘আনন্দ মঠ’ উপন্যাসে মুসলমানদের উদ্দেশ্যে প্রয়োগকরেছে। ‘ম্লেচ্ছ’ হতে শুরু করে ‘যবন’ পর্যন্ত। এমনকি প্রাচীনকালে বৌদ্ধদের দেয়া ‘নেড়ে’গালিটাকেও সে উহ্য রাখেনি।
শুধু তাই নয়, তারা ম্লেচ্ছ, যবন, নেড়ে ছাড়াও মুসলমানদের পাষ-, পাপিষ্ঠ, পাপাত্মা, দুরাত্মা,দুরাশয়, নরাধম, নরপিশাচ, পাতকী, বানর, এঁড়ে, দেড়ে, ধেড়ে, অজ্ঞান, অকৃতজ্ঞ, ইতর এজাতীয় কোনো গালি দিতে বাদ দেয়নি।
তন্মধ্যে রবীন্দ্রনাথ উদ্দেশ্যপ্রণোদিত হয়ে মুসলিম বিদ্বেষ ও হিন্দু সাম্প্রদায়িক শক্তিকে চাঙ্গা করারজন্য অনেক গল্প, প্রবন্ধ, উপন্যাস, কবিতা রচনা করেছে। রবীন্দ্রনাথের লেখনি তার সমকালীনহিন্দুদেরকে চরম মুসলিমবিদ্বেষী হতে উৎসাহিত করেছিল।
রবীন্দ্রনাথ কী রকম ইসলাম ও মুসলিম বিদ্বেষী ছিল, তা একটা প্রমাণেই বুঝা যাবে। তার‘রীতিমত নভেল’ নামক ছোটগল্পে মুসলিম চরিত্র হরণ করেছে এভাবে-
“আল্লাহো আকবর শব্দে বনভূমি প্রতিধ্বনিত হয়ে উঠেছে। একদিকে তিন লক্ষ যবন (মুসলিম)সেনা অন্য দিকে তিন সহস্র আর্য (হিন্দু) সৈন্য। … পাঠক, বলিতে পার … কাহার বজ্রমন্ডিত ‘হরহর বোম বোম’ শব্দে তিন লক্ষ ম্লেচ্ছ কণ্ঠের ‘আল্লাহো আকবর’ ধ্বনি নিমগ্ন হয়ে গেলো। ইনিইসেই ললিতসিংহ। কাঞ্চীর সেনাপতি। ভারত-ইতিহাসের ধ্রুব নক্ষত্র।”
শুধু ‘রীতিমত নভেল’ই নয়। রবীন্দ্রনাথ তার ‘সমস্যা’ ‘পুরান’, ‘দুরাশা’ ও ‘কাবুলীওয়ালা’ গল্পেমুসলমানদের জারজ, চোর, খুনি ও অবৈধ প্রণয় আকাঙ্খিণী হিসেবে উপস্থাপন করেছে।(নাঊযুবিল্লাহ!)
বিশেষ করে ‘দুরাশা’ গল্পের কাহিনীটি আরো স্পর্শকাতর। এখানে দেখানো হয়েছে, একজন মুসলিমনারীর হিন্দু ধর্ম তথা ব্রাহ্মণদের প্রতি কি দুর্নিবার আকর্ষণ এবং এই মুসলিম নারীর ব্রাহ্মণ হবারপ্রাণান্তকর কোশেশের চিত্র।
রবীন্দ্রনাথ এমন এক ব্যক্তি যে ভারতবর্ষব্যাপী শুধুমাত্র হিন্দুদের নিয়ে একক ও ঐক্যবদ্ধ হিন্দুরাষ্ট্র প্রতিষ্ঠার আকাঙ্খা পোষণ করতো। মহারাষ্ট্রের ‘বালগঙ্গাধর তিলক’ ১৮৯৫ সালের ১৫এপ্রিল ‘শিবাজী উৎসব’ প্রতিষ্ঠা করেছিল উগ্র হিন্দু জাতীয়তা ও সাম্প্রদায়িকতা প্রচার ও প্রসারেরজন্য।
‘সঞ্চয়িতা’ কাব্যগ্রন্থে ‘শিবাজী উৎসব’ কবিতায় যবন, ম্লেচ্ছ রবীন্দ্রনাথ এ আকাঙ্খা করে বলে-
“এক ধর্ম কাব্য খন্ড ছিন্ন বিক্ষিপ্ত ভারত বেঁধে দিব আমি …….
…….. ‘এক ধর্ম রাজ্য হবে এ ভারতে’ এ মহাবচন করিব সম্বল।”
‘শিবাজী-উৎসব’ নামক কবিতায় রবীন্দ্রনাথ আরো বলেছে- শিবাজী চেয়েছে হিন্দুত্বের ভিত্তিতেভারতজুড়ে এক ধর্ম রাজ্যের প্রতিষ্ঠা। কিন্তু বাঙালিরা সেটা বোঝেনি। না বুঝে করেছে ভুল।
কিন্তু এতসব ইসলাম ও মুসলিম বিদ্বেষী সাম্প্রদায়িক বক্তব্য দেয়ার পরও, এতসব লেখার পরওএদেশের মুসলিম নামধারী রবীন্দ্র পূজারী মহলের বোধোদয় হচ্ছে না! }

ঊনিশ শতকের শেষ পদে দাঁড়িয়ে হিন্দু পুনরুত্থানবাদী কথিত উচ্চবিত্ত আর ইংরেজদের দালালহিন্দু মধ্যবিত্তের একটা প্রধান লক্ষ্য ছিল প্রাচীন ভারত আর হিন্দুদের বীরত্বগাথাকে নিয়ে মিথ বাকল্পকাহিনী তৈরী করা।
যবন, ম্লেচ্ছ বঙ্কিমচন্দ্র থেকে রবীন্দ্রনাথ পর্যন্ত সকলের মাঝে হিন্দু বীর অনুসন্ধান কিংবা হিন্দু বীরনিয়ে মিথ বা কল্পকাহিনী তৈরির একটা প্রয়াস বরাবরই লক্ষ্য করা যায়। আত্মগোপনকারী মারাঠীসন্ত্রাসী, খুন, হত্যা আর লুণ্ঠনকারী শিবাজীকে দেবতুল্য করে রবীন্দ্রনাথের ‘শিবাজী উৎসব’কবিতা এ প্রয়াসেরই অংশ।
হিন্দু সমাজের নতুন প্রজন্মের কাছে কট্টর মুসলিম বিদ্বেষী, সন্ত্রাসী যবন, ম্লেচ্ছ শিবাজীকে আদর্শহিসেবে প্রতিষ্ঠার লক্ষ্য হলো রবীন্দ্রনাথের ‘প্রতিনিধি’ কবিতা। এই যবন, ম্লেচ্ছ রামদাস ছিলমুসলিম বিদ্বেষী চিন্তার অগ্রপুরুষ। শিবাজী তার কাছ থেকে মুসলিম বিদ্বেষী দীক্ষা গ্রহণ করে।
যবন, ম্লেচ্ছ রবীন্দ্রনাথ শিবাজী উৎসব (১৯০৪) কবিতাটি যখন রচনা করে তখন সে কবিহিসেবে পরিচিত। একই সঙ্গে কলকাতার যবন, ম্লেচ্ছ হিন্দু মহলেও সে সমাদৃত। ঊনিশ শতকেরশেষ এবং বিশ শতকের শুরুর পর্বে রবীন্দ্রনাথের চিন্তা ও কর্মের ধারাবাহিকতার সাথে কবিতাটিরমর্মার্থ ওতপ্রোতভাবে জড়িত।
মহারাষ্ট্রের বালগঙ্গাধর তিলক ১৮৯৫ সালের ১৫ এপ্রিল সেখানে শিবাজী উৎসবের প্রতিষ্ঠা করে।তিলক শিবাজী উৎসব প্রতিষ্ঠা করেছিল উগ্র হিন্দু জাতীয়তা ও সাম্প্রদায়িকতা প্রচার ও প্রসারেরজন্য। ক্রমে শিবাজী উৎসবের অনুকরণে চালু হয় গণপতি পূজা। ইতিপূর্বে ১৮৯৩ সালে প্রতিষ্ঠিতগোরক্ষনী সভা ওই অঞ্চলে প্রভাব বিস্তারের চেষ্টা করে।
মহারাষ্ট্রের শিবাজী উৎসবের অনুকরণে সখারাম গণেশ দেউস্করের প্রচেষ্টায় কলকাতায় শিবাজীউৎসব প্রচলিত হয় ১৯০২ সালের অক্টোবর মাসে। দুর্গাপূজার মহাষ্টমীর দিনে বীরাষ্টমী উৎসবপ্রচলন হয়। সে ১৯০৩ সালের ১০ মে শিবাজী উৎসবের অনুকরণে প্রতাপাদিত্য উৎসব প্রচলনকরে এবং একই বছরের ২০ সেপ্টেম্বর তারিখে প্রবর্তন করে উদয়াদিত্য উৎসব।
কলকাতার বাইরে থাকার কারণে যবন, ম্লেচ্ছ রবীন্দ্রনাথ শিবাজী উৎসবের অনুকরণে প্রবর্তিতএই তিনটি উৎসবে উপস্থিত ছিল না। কিন্তু ফসলী সন ১২ আশ্বিন, ১৩১০ (২৯ সেপ্টেম্বর,১৯০৩) দুর্গাপূজার মহাষ্টমীর দিনে ২৬ বালিগঞ্জ সার্কুলার রোডে জানকীনাথ ঘোষালের বাড়িতেযে বীরাষ্টমী উৎসব অনুষ্ঠিত হয় রবীন্দ্রনাথ তাতে সক্রিয়ভাবে যোগ দেয়। প্রদত্ত এই তথ্যগুলোথেকে এটাই প্রমাণিত হয় যে যবন, ম্লেচ্ছ রবীন্দ্রনাথের আনুকূল্যতায় ও উৎসাহ-উদ্দীপনায় কট্টরমুসলিম বিরোধী, সাম্প্রদায়িক শিবাজী উৎসব কলকাতার উচ্চবিত্ত ও মধ্যবিত্ত যবন, ম্লেচ্ছ হিন্দুমহলে জনপ্রিয়তা অর্জন করে।
১৩১০ ফসলী সনের ১লা শ্রাবণ কলকাতার ক্লাসিক থিয়েটারে সুরেন্দ্রনাথ বন্দোপাধ্যায়েরসভাপতিত্বে অনুষ্ঠিত শিবাজী উৎসবে বিপিনচন্দ্র পাল, শরৎচন্দ্র মল্লিক, পাঁচকড়ি বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায়,নিখিলনাথ রায় প্রমুখরা বক্তৃতা করে। এই সভায় মহারাষ্ট্রের অধিবাসী সখারাম গণেশ দেউস্করেরশিবাজীর মহত্ত্ব পুস্তিকাটি বিনামূল্যে সকলের মাঝে বিতরণ করা হয়।
এখান থেকে এটাই প্রমাণিত হয় যে মুসলিম বিরোধী শিবাজী উৎসবের প্রসার ও বিস্তারেকলকাতার উচ্চবিত্তের তথা হিন্দু জমিদার শ্রেণীর আর্থিক সহায়তা বিরাজমান ছিল। কলকাতায়বহিরাগত যবন, ম্লেচ্ছ সখারাম গণেশ দেউস্করের পক্ষে বিনামূল্যে বই বিতরণের বিষয়টিতৎকালীন আর্থ সামাজিক প্রেক্ষাপটে কোনক্রমেই সম্ভব ছিল না। সখারামের সাথে শিবাজীউৎসবের অনুকরণে রবীন্দ্রনাথের যোগসূত্র গড়ে উঠেছিল অনেক আগে থেকে, নানা উপলক্ষে সেআর্থিক সাহায্যও পেয়েছে বলে ক্যাশবহিতে তার উল্লেখ পাওয়া যায়।
এতে একটি বিষয় সুস্পষ্ট হয়ে উঠে যে, মারাঠা থেকে আগত বাংলায় শিবাজী উৎসবের প্রবর্তকসখারাম গণেশ দেউস্করের সাথে যবন, ম্লেচ্ছ রবীন্দ্রনাথের সম্পর্কটি ব্যক্তিগত পর্যায়ে সীমাবদ্ধছিল না। তাদের মধ্যে একটা আর্থিক লেনদেনের সম্পর্কও গড়ে উঠেছিল। এজন্যই কুখ্যাত যবন,ম্লেচ্ছ সখারামের পক্ষে সম্ভব হয়েছিল শিবাজী মহত্ত্ব লিখে বিনামূল্যে জনসাধারণের মাঝে বিতরণকরা।
আর শিবাজী মহত্ত্ব মানেই হলো উগ্র মুসলিম বিরোধিতা এবং চরম সাম্প্রদায়িকতা। বঙ্গভঙ্গেরআবহাওয়া যখন বাংলার হিন্দু মুসলমান উভয়কে আন্দোলিত করছে। দেশের দুই প্রধানসম্প্রদায়ের মধ্যে বঙ্গভঙ্গের পটভূমিতে ক্রমাগত যে দূরত্ব তৈরি হচ্ছিল কিংবা অন্যভাবে বলা যায়,বাংলার কথিত হিন্দু জমিদার ও মধ্যবিত্ত সমাজ যেভাবে মুসলিম বিদ্বেষী হয়ে উঠছিল শিবাজীউৎসব তার মাত্রাকে আরো তীব্রতর করেছিল।
শিবাজী উৎসবের মূল মন্ত্র ছিল চরম মুসলিম বিদ্বেষ, সন্ত্রাস এবং সাম্প্রদায়িকতা।বস্তুত এই শিবাজী উৎসবের সূত্র ধরেই বাংলায় সন্ত্রাসবাদী রাজনীতির এবংসাম্প্রদায়িকতার ভিত্তি স্থাপিত হয়। এর ফলশ্রুতিতে বাঙালি হিন্দু ও বাঙালিমুসলমান পরস্পর বিপরীত পথে ধাবিত হয়। ঐতিহাসিকভাবে এটা অনস্বীকার্য যে,এই সন্ত্রাস আর সাম্প্রদায়িক রাজনীতির দায়ভার পুরোপুরিভাবে বর্তায় যবন, ম্লেচ্ছহিন্দু জমিদার আর মধ্যবিত্ত শ্রেণীর উপর। শিবাজী উৎসব পালনের মধ্য দিয়ে সমগ্রবাংলায় যখন মুসলিম বিদ্বেষ আর সাম্প্রদায়িক রাজনীতি এবং সমাজনীতির ভূমিনির্মাণ করা হয় তখন সাথে সাথে বাঙালি মুসলিম সমাজকে অর্থে বিত্তে, শিক্ষায়ষড়যন্ত্রমূলকভাবে পিছিয়ে দেয়া হয়। (ইনশাআল্লাহ চলবে

ধন্যবাদ, ফারজানা আহমদ বোন। কি সুন্দর, মর্মস্পর্শী, সত্যদর্শী, মানবতাবাদী ও প্রেরণাদায়ী কবিতা! মনে হল নতুন করে যেন পড়ছি, নজরুলের সেই কালজয়ী লেখা, 'জীবনে যাদের হররোজ রোজা ক্ষুধায় আসে না নিদ. মুমূর্ষু সেই কৃষকের ঘরে এসেছে কি আজ ঈদ?' অথবা সুকান্তের সেই অমর কথা, 'ক্ষুধার রাজ্যে পৃথিবী গদ্যময়, পূর্ণিমা চাঁদ যেন ঝলসানো রুটি'।
নিপীড়িতদের নিয়ে লেখা অত্যন্ত মহৎ। আপনিও সেই মহৎ কাজে আত্ম নিয়োগ করেছেন। রইলো অন্তহীন শুভ কামনা।
কবি সাহিত্যিকগণ সত্য তুলে ধরেন, সংগ্রামীরা, রাজনীতিকরা সে সত্য প্রতিষ্ঠিত করেন। আমাকে কদিন আগে ইমেইলে একজন জিজ্ঞাসা করলেন, নিপীড়িতরা কি করবে? আমি উত্তর দিলাম, চিরকাল তারা যা করে এসেছে তাই করবে, অর্থাৎ সংগ্রাম করবে। নজরুলের স্বরে বলবে, "মহা- বিদ্রোহী রণ-ক্লান্ত আমি সেই দিন হব শান্ত, যবে উৎপীড়িতের ক্রন্দন-রোল, আকাশে বাতাসে ধ্বনিবে না, অত্যাচারীর খড়গ কৃপাণ ভীম রণ-ভূমে রণিবে না", P B Shelley-র স্বরে বলবে, “Rise like Lions after slumber. এ একজনের কাহিনী নয়
“... আলীমুদ্দিন ছাতা মেরামতের কাজ করে। এ সময়টা তার জন্য ব্যস্ততার মৌসুম। রােজ বিকেলে বঙ্গোপসাগরের কালাে মেঘ পদ্মার উপর দিয়ে ভেসে যায়, আর মানিকগঞ্জে মুষলধারে বৃষ্টি নামে। শহরের প্রধান বাজারের রাস্তায় আলীমুদ্দিন এক পায়ের উপর আর এক পা আড়াআড়িভাবে রেখে বসে ছেঁড়া ছাতা সেলাই করে, জোড়া তালি দেয় এবং ছাতার শিক মেরামত করে। সাইড বিজনেস হিসেবে পুরান তালা মেরামত করে, পুরান চাবিও সরবরাহ করে। এমন মৌসুমেও আলীমুদ্দিন ক্ষুধার্ত। বলল, “যেদিন বেশী কাজ মেলে, সেদিন এক বেলা ভাত খাই। যেদিন তেমন কাজ পাই না সেদিন ভাতের বদলে একটা চাপাতি খাই। আর এমন অনেকদিন যায় যেদিন কিছুই খেতে পাই না।” তার দিকে এক নজর তাকালেই বুঝা যায়, সে সত্যি কথাই বলছে। সবুজ লুঙ্গীর নীচে তার পা দুটিতে মাংস আছে বলে মনে হয় না। আলীমুদ্দিন যে ছাতা মেরামত করে, সেই ছাতার মতই তার নিজের পাঁজর ও মেরুদণ্ড বের হয়ে আছে।
ঢাকার ৪০ মাইল উত্তরে মহকুমা শহর মানিকগঞ্জ। ১৫ হাজার লােকের বসতি। তাদের মধ্যে আলীমুদ্দিনের মত আরাে অনেকে আছে। কোথাও একজন মােটা মানুষ চোখে পড়ে না। কালু বিশ্বাস বলল, “আমাদের মেয়েরা লজ্জায় বের হয় না— তারা অর্ধনগ্ন।” মানিকগঞ্জে এ অবস্থা কেন ? — মানুষের খাবার নেই, কাপড় নেই। “মুক্তি যুদ্ধের পর থেকে জিনিসপত্রের দাম বেড়েই চলেছে। চাল-ডাল কেনার সামর্থ্য কারাে নেই। সরকার বলেছিল আজাদীর পর সুদিন আসবে। আমার ভাই মুক্তিযুদ্ধে মারা গেছে। আমি আমার এই পা হারিয়েছি। সরকার কিছু করে নাই”--- কথাগুলাে বলল মনসুর আলী। মনসুর আলী একজন চাষী। বয়স পাঁয়তাল্লিশ। ১৯৭১ সালে পাক-বাহিনীর বিরুদ্ধে গেরিলা হয়ে লড়েছে। একটা পা হারিয়েছে। বাঁশের ক্র্যাচ্ ও লাঠির মাঝে দেহের সমতা রাখতে গিয়ে মনসুর আলীর হাত কাঁপছিল। ঘাড়ে ঝুলান জীর্ণ থলি থেকে লাল সুতায় বাঁধা, শত হাতের ছোঁয়ায় বিবর্ণ একটা কাগজ বের করে দেখাল। শিরােনামায় লেখা রয়েছে “প্রধানমন্ত্রীর রিলিফ ও ওয়েলফেয়ার ফাণ্ড”। মনসুর আলী বলল, শহরের সরকারী কর্মচারীরা তাকে বলেছে, “এ ফাণ্ড থেকে টাকা পাওয়ার কথা ভুলে যাও।” সে অভিযােগ করল, “আমি ভিক্ষুক নই, কিন্তু বন্ধু-বান্ধবদের কাছ থেকে খাবার ভিক্ষা করতে বাধ্য হয়েছি। নইলে আমি মরে যাব।”
আলীমুদ্দিনের কাহিনী গােটা মানিকগঞ্জের কাহিনী, বাংলাদেশের লক্ষ লক্ষ মানুষের কাহিনী, শত শত শহর-বন্দরের কাহিনী। এ পর্যন্ত বিদেশ থেকে ৫০ লাখ টনেরও বেশী খাদ্যশস্য বাংলাদেশে পাঠান হয়েছে। কিন্তু যাদের জন্য পাঠান হয়েছে তারাই পায়নি। খাদ্যদ্রব্য ও জিনিসপত্রের দাম অসম্ভব বেড়ে গেছে, কিন্তু লােকের আয় বাড়েনি, বরং কমেছে। আবদুল হাদীর মত মধ্যবিত্ত লােকদেরও একই কাহিনী। হাদী স্থানীয় বাংলাদেশ কৃষি ব্যাংকের একাউন্টেন্ট। মাসিক উপার্জন তার ১৬ পাউণ্ডের সামান্য বেশী। হাদীর বয়স তিরিশ। বিবাহিত। তার তিনটি শিশু-সন্তান আছে। ব্যাংকের সামনে কর্দমাক্ত রাস্তার ওপাশে একটি করােগেটেড শেডের এক অংশে হাদী সপরিবারে বাস করে। খাওয়া-দাওয়া ও বাসা ভাড়া বাবৎ যা খরচ হয় তা তার উপার্জনের দ্বিগুণ। হাদী বললেন, “এভাবে আর কতদিন চলবে জানি না।”
মানিকগঞ্জের প্রায় সকলের মত হাদীও গত মার্চ মাসের নির্বাচনে শেখ মুজিবুর রহমানের আওয়ামী লীগকে ভােট দিয়ে জয়যুক্ত করেছিলেন। কিন্তু এখন, হাদী বলতে লাগলেন, “রেশনের দোকানেও কিছু পাওয়া যায় না। ওদিকে সরকারী মহলে অর্থের একটানা অপব্যয় চলছে। আগামী নির্বাচনে যে কেউ ভাত-কাপড় দিতে পারবে তাকেই ভােট দেব।” হাদীর হিসাব মত মানিকগঞ্জে মুজিবের সমর্থন শতকরা ৬০ ভাগ কমে গেছে। বাংলাদেশে যে এত বিপুল পরিমাণ খাদ্য-সামগ্রী এসেছে, তার কি হ’ল ? “কি হয়েছে তা সকলেই জানে। সব ভারতে পাচার হয়ে গেছে।” --- হাদী জবাব দিলেন।
সর্বত্রই শােনা যায় যে, প্রচুর পরিমাণ গম ও চাল ভারতে পাচার হয়ে যায়। স্বাধীনতার পর আট/দশ মাস পর্যন্ত ধারণা করা হত যে, স্থানীয় রাজনৈতিক চাইরা রিলিফের গম ও চাল আত্মসাৎ করে কালোবাজারে বিক্রী করেন। এখন এসব কালােবাজার পর্যন্ত পৌঁছায় না, পথেই উধাও হয়ে যায়। বিদেশ থেকে যে খাদ্য-শস্য আসে, তা চাটগাঁ বন্দরে তদারক করেন জাতিসংঘের বাংলাদেশস্থ রিলিফ অফিস। যেই মাত্র জাহাজ থেকে খাদ্যশস্য, ময়দা, চিনি, রান্নার তেল ইত্যাদি নামান হ'ল, অমনি তাদের তদারকী শেষ হয়ে গেল। বিতরণ ব্যবস্থার কর্তৃত্ব বাংলাদেশ সরকারের হাতে। শেখ মুজিব আভ্যন্তরীণ বিলি-বণ্টনে বিদেশীদের তদারকী বরদাশত করতে রাজী নন। যদিও বিতরণের সুবিধার জন্যে জাতিসংঘই বাংলাদেশ সরকারকে ৭২৩টি লরী খয়রাত দিয়েছেন। এসব লরীর কয়েকশ’ ঢাকা ও চাটগাঁর রাস্তায় পড়ে পড়ে নষ্ট হচ্ছে। অনেক রাজনীতিবিদ ও তাদের পরিবারের সদস্যরা এগুলি ব্যক্তিগত বাহন হিসাবেও ব্যবহার করছেন। চাটগাঁয়ের গুদাম থেকে খাদ্যসামগ্রী দেশের অভ্যন্তরে নারায়ণগঞ্জ ও খুলনা বন্দরে আনীত হয়। সেখান থেকে তা গরু-গাড়ী, লরী, ট্রেন ও ছােট ছােট নৌকায় করে স্থানীয় সরবরাহ ডিপােতে নিয়ে যাওয়া হয়। এই পর্যায়েই বিতরণ ব্যবস্থা ভেঙ্গে পড়ে। প্রাইভেট ডিলাররা তাদের বরাদ্দ ঠিকই নেয়, কিন্তু রেশনের দোকানগুলোতে সম্ভবতঃ অর্ধেক মাত্র সরবরাহ করে। খাতাপত্রে কিন্তু দেখায় যে, পুরা সাপ্লাই দেওয়া হয়েছে। বাদবাকী খাদ্যশস্য তারা সীমান্তের ওপারে পাচার করে দেয়। বিদেশ থেকে সাহায্যস্বরূপ যে চাল ও গম আসে, সরকার যা ক্রয় করেন এবং দেশে যা উৎপন্ন হয়, সব মিলে দেশের সকল মানুষের জন্য যথেষ্ট। কিন্তু খাদ্য বিতরণ ব্যবস্থার তিক্ততম পরিহাস এই যে, যাদের প্রয়ােজন, তারাই পায় না॥"— লুই সিমনস / গার্ডিয়ান (লণ্ডন) - মার্চ ৩০, ১৯৭৪

দেউলিয়া হতে চলেছে
“... “স্বাধীনতার পর বত্রিশ মাসে আমরা যা’ কিছু করেছি, বন্যা এসে সব ধ্বংস করে দিয়েছে।”— দুঃখ করে বললেন, বাংলাদেশের প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ মুজিবুর রহমান। তাঁর মতে বন্যা পাকিস্তানের পঁচিশ বছরের অবহেলার ফল ছাড়া আর কিছু নয়। তিনি তীব্রভাবে অস্বীকার করেন যে, বাংলাদেশ বন্যানিয়ন্ত্রণের ব্যাপারে উদ্যোগ নিতে ব্যর্থ হয়েছে, যদিও অধিকাংশ পর্যবেক্ষকই এ বিষয়ে নিঃসন্দেহ। উপরন্তু শেখ মুজিব ফের আশা করছেন যে, বহিঃর্বিশ্ব বাংলাদেশের জাতীয় বিপর্যয়ে সঠিকভাবে সাড়া দেবে। গত দুই বছরে কমপক্ষেও ৩ হাজার ৫ শত মিলিয়ন মার্ক সাহায্য দেবার পরও উন্নতির কোন লক্ষণ না দেখে বহিঃর্বিশ্বের ক্রমশঃই ধারণা হচ্ছে যে, বাংলাদেশ একটা ‘তলাবিহীন পিপে’। সে যাই হােক, ১৯৭০ সালের প্রবল জলোচ্ছাসের সময় এবং বার মাস পরে মুক্তিযুদ্ধের সময় বাঙালীদের আবেদন দুনিয়া জুড়ে যে সাড়া জাগিয়েছিল, সে তুলনায় এবারকার বন্যা পরিস্থিতিতে বিদেশী সাহায্য নেহাৎ নগণ্য। এ সময় জরুরী অবস্থা মােকাবেলা করার জন্য ঢাকা যেখানে বৈদেশিক মুদ্রায় ৭৯৩ মিলিয়ন জার্মান মার্ক ও আরো ৩৯৩ মিলিয়ন জার্মান মার্কের প্রয়ােজনীয়তার কথা বলছে, সেখানে আজ পর্যন্ত দ্রব্যাদিসহ ২৫ মিলিয়ন মার্কও এসে পৌঁছেনি। একই সময় এই ধারণাও দৃঢ়তর হচ্ছে যে, বাংলাদেশ সরকার নিজেদের অক্ষমতা ঢাকবার জন্য ‘স্কেপ গোট’ খুঁজে বেড়াচ্ছেন এবং বিশেষ করে জনসাধারণের দুঃখ-দুর্দশার উপর তাদের নীতি প্রতিষ্ঠিত করতে প্রয়াস পাচ্ছেন। অদ্ভুত ব্যাপার এই যে, সরকার এ বছরের বন্যার ক্ষয়-ক্ষতির যে হিসাব দিয়েছেন, তা’ চলতি বছরের উন্নয়ন পরিকল্পনার ঘাটতির প্রায় সমান। প্রকাশ থাকে যে, সে ঘাটতি অর্থ দফতর যে-কোনভাবে বৈদেশিক সাহায্যে পূরণ করতে চেয়েছিলেন। বন্যায় আক্রান্ত হওয়ার আগেই বাংলাদেশে দেউলিয়াপনার ছায়া দেখা যাচ্ছিল। অধিকন্তু, ইহা সত্য যে, গত জুন মাস থেকেই বাংলাদেশ স্টেট ব্যাংকের গ্যারান্টি সত্ত্বেও বিদেশী ব্যাংকগুলো ‘লেটার অব ক্রেডিট' প্রত্যাখ্যান করে আসছে। এক কথায়, বাংলাদেশ সরকার যদি বিদেশে এ বিশ্বাস জন্মাতে অপারগ হন যে, ভবিষ্যতে বৈদেশিক সাহায্যের সঙ্গে আভ্যন্তরীণ প্রচেষ্টা আরো ব্যাপক হবে, তাহলে দেশ অপ্রতিরােধ্য গতিতে দেউলিয়াপনার দিকে এগিয়ে যাবে॥"

মিথ্যা আর দুর্নীতি বেড়েই চলেছে
“... প্রতি সপ্তাহে বাংলাদেশ থেকে ভয়াবহ খবর আসে। আমরা আমাদের এশীয় সংবাদদাতা মিঃ কারলস উইডামকে ‘এশিয়ার পর্ণ কুটীরে’ পাঠিয়েছিলাম। সেখানকার পরিস্থিতির তিনি যে মূল্যায়ন করেছেন, তা অত্যন্ত ভীতিপ্রদ : লােভী বাংলাদেশ সরকারের কর্তারা বন্যাপীড়িত লােকদের জন্য দেওয়া আন্তর্জাতিক খয়রাত আত্মসাৎ করে মােটা হচ্ছেন। সাহায্যকারী দেশগুলো এ সম্পর্কে ওয়াকেফহাল, ফলে তারা আর সাহায্য দিতে ইচ্ছুক নয়। কিন্তু এদিকে বাংলাদেশের সাধারণ মানুষ প্রতিদিন গরীব থেকে আরাে গরীব হচ্ছে। এমন কি আদর্শবাদীরাও বাংলাদেশ সম্পর্কে সন্দিহান হয়ে পড়েছেন। প্রথমদিকে বাংলাদেশ সরকারের হিসাবে বন্যায় মৃতের সংখ্যা ছিল ২,০০০। এখন তা’ নেমে ১,৭০০-তে দাঁড়িয়েছে। এই বিভ্রান্তিকর তথ্যের জন্য কারো কারো মুখে মন্তব্য শােনা যাচ্ছে যে, তারা ঠিক জায়গা মত কমা বসিয়েছিলেন কিনা ? আরাে সন্দেহ করা হয় যে, বন্যা পরিস্থিতিকে ভয়াবহ করে দেখিয়ে বেশী সাহায্য আদায়ের উদ্দেশ্যে সরকারী হিসাব বাড়িয়ে তােলা হয়েছিল। তবে উন্নতি এবং উন্নয়নশীল দেশসমূহ এই বিষয়ে বেশ সচেতন। ফলে পুরান প্রবাদটিরই পুনরাবৃত্তি চলছে : “বাঙালীদের মাথা আকাশে, পা ধূলায় ও হাত অপরের পকেটে।” এ ব্যাপারে কারাের সন্দেহ নাই যে, দুর্ভিক্ষ সামলাবার জন্য বাংলাদেশের বিপুল পরিমাণ সাহায্যের প্রয়ােজন। কিন্তু সাহায্যকারী দেশগুলোর ধারণা এই যে, বন্যার অজুহাতে বাংলাদেশ সরকার অধিকতর খয়রাত আদায় করে নিজেদের দুর্নীতির খােরাক যােগাতে চাচ্ছে। যদিও বাংলাদেশ ১৯৭৩ সালের শেষ নাগাদ প্রায় ৪ হাজার মিলিয়ন ফ্র্যাংক সাহায্য পেয়েছে (এত কম সময়ে এত বেশী সাহায্য আর কোন উন্নয়নশীল দেশ কখনো পায়নি) তবুও সরকার বন্যা প্রতিরােধকল্পে কোন টাকাই বরাদ্দ করেননি। এক কোটি বেকার বাঙালীকে মাটির বাঁধ তৈরী, খাল খনন প্রভৃতি ফলপ্রসূ কাজে নিয়ােজিত করা যেত। এভাবে চীন ও ভারতে কাজ হয়েছে। ‘নিজের সাহায্যের জন্য নিজেও সাহায্য কর’---একথা বাংলাদেশে অর্থ হীন। কেননা, যত সাহায্য এসেছে, তা’ আওয়ামী লীগ নেতাদের ব্যক্তিগত পকেটে গিয়েছে। মিঃ টনি হেগেন --- যিনি বাংলাদেশে জাতিসংঘের দেওয়া সাহায্যের চার্জে ছিলেন --- প্রকাশ করেছিলেন যে, যাবতীয় খয়রাতি শিশুখাদ্য ও কম্বলের অতি অল্পই ঠিক জায়গায় পৌঁছেছে। বাদবাকী কালােবাজারে বিক্রী হয়েছে অথবা পাচার হয়ে ভারতে চলে গেছে। সে অবস্থার আজো পরিবর্তন হয়নি। ঢাকার সংবাদপত্রে যখন ঘােষণা করা হ’ল যে বন্যা পীড়িতদের জন্য এক উড়ােজাহাজ ভর্তি গুড়া দুধ বিমান বন্দরে আসছে, ঠিক তার পরদিনই ঢাকার হােটেল ম্যানেজাররা ওগুলাে কিনতে বাজারে তাদের লোক পাঠিয়ে দিলেন। বস্তুতঃ এইভাবেই বাংলাদেশে বন্যার্তদের জন্য দেওয়া বিদেশী সাহায্য বিতরণ করা হয়ে থাকে। যে সরকার শিয়ালকে হাঁস পাহারা দিতে দিয়েছেন, অর্থাৎ যে সরকার কুখ্যাত জোচ্চোর (দেশে ও বিদেশে) গাজী গােলাম মােস্তফাকে জাতীয় রেডক্রসের সভাপতি নিযুক্ত করেছেন, সে সরকার সম্পর্কে কোন কিছুতেই বিস্মিত হওয়ার কিছু নেই। মােস্তফা এ পদ পেয়েছেন, যেহেতু তিনি ঢাকা আওয়ামী লীগের নেতা ছিলেন। এই গুরুত্বপূর্ণ পদে থাকায় তার অনেক বেশী মওকা মিলেছে। তিনি শুধু গুড়া দুধই কালোবাজারে বিক্রী করেননি, অনেক ঔষধ-পত্রও আত্মসাৎ করেছেন। বাংলাদেশ রেডক্রসের সভাপতি এখন ৩৭টি ঔষধের দোকানের মালিক। এ ধরনের বিবেকবর্জিত কাজের ফল চাক্ষুষ দেখতে হলে ৩ মাইল দূরে পুরান ঢাকার গেণ্ডারিয়া স্কুলে যাওয়া যেতে পারে। স্কুলটি এখন বন্যায় ঘর-বাড়ী হারিয়েছে এমন দুই হাজার পাঁচশ লােকের আশ্রয়স্থল। সারি সারি কঙ্কালসার শিশুরা শুয়ে আছে -- এত দুর্বল যে, ওদের কাঁদবার শক্তিটুকও লোপ পেয়েছে। ‘ক্যাম্প’-এর পরিচালককে জিজ্ঞাসা করা হল, সাহায্যকারী প্রতিষ্ঠান গুলাের কাছ থেকে তিনি কিছু পেয়েছেন কিনা? তিনি জবাব দিলেন “হ্যাঁ -- পেয়েছি, জাতীয় রেডক্রসের কাছ থেকে। দুর্ভাগ্যবশতঃ তা কাজে আসেনি। যে দুইটি সুইডিশ বিস্কুটের ও একটি ফরাসী শিশু-খাদ্যের বাক্স রেডক্রস দিয়েছিল, তা কীট আর পােকায় ভর্তি ছিল। এ সব খাদ্য গতকালকের উড়োজাহাজে আসেনি। ১৯৭০ সালের বিপর্যয়ের সময় থেকেই এগুলাে গুদামজাত হয়ে পড়েছিল॥"

বাংলাদেশ আজ দেউলিয়াত্বের পথে
“... বাংলাদেশের সাড়ে সাত কোটি লোক দুনিয়ার দরিদ্রতম মানুষের শ্রেণীভুক্ত। জাতিসংঘের হিসাব অনুযায়ী বাংলাদেশে বার্ষিক গড়পড়তা মাথাপিছু আয় তিরিশ পাউণ্ডের কাছাকাছি, যা দিয়ে ঢাকা ইন্টারকন্টিনেন্টাল হােটেলে, যেখানে অধিকাংশ ইউরােপীয়ানরা অবস্থান করেন -- একটি রুম দু’রাতের জন্য ভাড়া নেওয়া যায়। বাংলাদেশের জন্মের পর থেকে যে বৈদেশিক সাহায্য এসেছে তা ইতিপূর্বেই দুই হাজার মিলিয়ন ডলারের মাত্রা ছাড়িয়ে গেছে। অন্য কথায়, প্রতিটি পুরুষ, নারী ও শিশুর জন্য মাথাপিছু দশ পাউণ্ড করে সাহায্য এসেছে। এ ছাড়া বহু দাতব্য প্রতিষ্ঠানও মােটা রকমের সাহায্য দিয়েছে। এই উদার দান যুদ্ধোত্তর দুর্ভিক্ষ এড়াতেও ভয়ানকভাবে ক্ষতিগ্রস্ত রাস্তা ঘাট মেরামতে দেশকে সাহায্য করেছে। কিন্তু ক্রমেই প্রতীয়মান হচ্ছে যে, এই সাহায্যের উপযুক্ত ব্যবহার হয়নি। ভূমিহীন কৃষকদের অবস্থা স্পষ্টতঃই দিনে দিনে আরো ভয়াবহ হয়ে উঠছে। রিলিফের মাল কালােবাজারে বিক্রী এত ব্যাপক আকার ধারণ করেছিল যে, রেডক্রস-এর আন্তর্জাতিক সংসদ এক পর্যায়ে বাংলাদেশ থেকে একেবারেই চলে আসার সিদ্ধান্ত নিয়েছিল। সারা দুনিয়া সাহায্য দিয়ে বাংলাদেশকে প্লাবিত করে দিয়েছে। এর পরিমাণ ‘মার্শাল পরিকল্পনার’ সঙ্গে তুলনা করা যেতে পারে। অথচ ঢাকা থেকে মাত্র ৩৫ মাইল দূরে গত সপ্তাহে একটি শিশু মেয়ে গাছের পাতা খাচ্ছিল বেঁচে থাকার জন্য। ওর কাহিনী আদৌ নজীরবিহীন নয়! বাংলাদেশ আজ দেউলিয়া, এর কল-কারখানা স্তব্ধ। শতকরা ৪ ভাগ যানবাহন --- যা চাউল পরিবহনে অপরিহার্য -- ঠায় দাঁড়িয়ে আছে। দেশটির প্রধান বৈদেশিক মুদ্রা অর্জনকারী পাটের উৎপাদন কমে যাচ্ছে। পাটকল ও পরিবহন ব্যবস্থা পুরাদমে চালু রাখার জন্য অতিরিক্ত কল-কব্জা আমদানী করার সামর্থ্য এ সরকারের নেই। ২ কোটি ৬০ লক্ষ শ্রমিকের এক তৃতীয়াংশ বেকার। চাউলের দাম বহুগুণ বেড়ে গেছে, অথচ মানুষের আয় বাড়েনি। এই দু:খ দৈন্যের একটা ফলশ্রুতি বেপরােয়া খুন-খারাবী। দশ দিন আগে বােমা বিস্ফোরণের ফলে বাংলাদেশের বৃহত্তম সার কারখানা বিধ্বস্ত হয়ে গেছে। ঐদিনই চারটি চালের গুদাম লুষ্ঠিত হয়েছে এবং কয়েকজন আওয়ামী লীগের ক্ষমতাসীন সদস্য খুন হয়েছে॥"

“... এমন এক দিন ছিল যখন শেখ মুজিব ঢাকার রাস্তায় বের হলে জনসাধারণ হাত তুলে “জয় বাংলা”--- বাংলাদেশের জয়ধ্বনিতে মেতে উঠত। আর আজ যখন স্বীয় বাসভবন থেকে তিনি অফিসের দিকে যান, তখন দু’দিকে থাকে পুলিশের কড়া পাহারা। পথচারীরা সজ্ঞানে তার যাতায়াত উপেক্ষা করে। জাতির পিতাও আর গাড়ীর জানালা দিয়ে হাত আন্দোলিত করেন না --- তার দৃষ্টি থাকে সামনের দিকে নিবদ্ধ। বাংলাদেশ আজ বিপজ্জনকভাবে অরাজকতার মুখােমুখি। লাখ লাখ লােক ক্ষুধার্ত। হাজার হাজার মানুষ অনাহারে আছে। অনেকে না খেতে পেয়ে মারা যাচ্ছে। মফঃস্বল এলাকায় স্থানীয় কর্মচারীরা ভয় পাচ্ছে যে, আগামী তিনটা মাস খুব দুঃসময় যাবে। ক্ষুধার্ত মানুষের ভীড়ে ঢাকায় দম বন্ধ হয়ে আসে। এখন আবার চলছে বন্যা উপদ্রুতদের ভীড়। গত তেত্রিশ মাসে ঢাকার জনসংখ্যা দাঁড়িয়েছে তিরিশ লাখে। নতুন যারা ভীড় করছে তারা এমন নােংরা বাড়ীতে থাকে যার তুলনা দুনিয়ার কোথাও নেই। কোথাও যদি বিনামূল্যে চাল বিতরণ করা হয়, সেখানে শরণার্থীদের মধ্যে মারামারি লেগে যায়। বুদ্ধিজীবীরা বলেন, এই ক্ষুধার্ত জনতা ক্ষেপে গেলে তাদের রক্ষা নেই। বাংলাদেশ আজ দেউলিয়া। গত আঠার মাসে চালের দাম চারগুণ বেড়েছে। সরকারী কর্মচারীদের মাইনের সবটুকুই চলে যায় খাদ্য-সামগ্রী কিনতে। আর গরীবরা থাকে অনাহারে। কিন্তু যতই বিপদ ঘনিয়ে আসছে, শেখ মুজিব ততই মনগড়া জগতে আশ্রয় নিচ্ছেন। ভাবছেন, দেশের লােক এখনও তাকে ভালবাসে --- সমস্ত মসিবতের জন্য পাকিস্তানই দায়ী — আর বাইরের দুনিয়া তাঁর সাহায্যে এখনাে এগিয়ে আসবে এবং বাংলাদেশ উদ্ধার পাবে। নিছক দিবাস্বপ্ন! মুজিব সম্পর্কে বরাবরই সন্দেহ ছিল। নেতা হিসেবে থাকার আজো তাঁর আকর্ষণ রয়েছে। তিনি আবেগপ্রবণ বক্তা। তার অহংকার আছে --- সাহস আছে। কিন্তু আজ দেশ যখন বিপর্যয়ের দিকে এগিয়ে যাচ্ছে, তখনও তিনি দিনের অর্ধেক ভাগ আওয়ামী লীগের চাঁইদের সাথে ঘরােয়া আলাপে কাটাচ্ছেন। যিনি বাংলাদেশের সমস্ত গুরুত্বপূর্ণ এবং বহু ছােটখাট বিষয়েও সিদ্ধান্ত নিয়ে থাকেন, তিনি আজ আত্মম্ভরিতার মধ্যে কয়েদী হয়ে চাটুকার ও পরগাছা পরিবেষ্টিত হয়ে আছেন। বাইরের দুনিয়া বাংলাদেশের দুর্নীতির কথা ফলাও করে বলে থাকে। সমাজের নীচুতলায় যারা আছে, তারা হয়ত আজ খেতে পেয়েছে — কিন্তু কাল কি খাবে জানে না। এমন দেশে দুর্নীতি অপরিহার্য। তবে এমন লােকও আছে যাদের দুর্নীতিবাজ হবার কোন অজুহাত নেই। সদ্য ফুলে-ফেঁপে ওঠা তরুণ বাঙালীরা হােটেল ইন্টারকন্টিনেন্টালের শরাবখানায় ভীড় জমায়। তারা বেশ ভালই আছে। এরাই ছিল মুক্তিযােদ্ধা - বাংলাদেশের বীর বাহিনী। গেরিলাযুদ্ধে এরা পাকিস্তানকে হারিয়েছে। তাদের প্রাধান্য আজ অপরিমেয়। রাজনৈতিক দালালী করে ও ব্যবসায়ীদের পারমিট জোগাড় করে তারা আজ ধনাঢ্য জীবন যাপন করছে। সরকারী কর্মচারীদের তারা ভয় দেখাচ্ছে। নেতাদের উপর প্রভাব বিস্তার করছে এবং প্রয়ােজন হলে অস্ত্র প্রয়ােগ করছে। এরাই হচ্ছে আওয়ামী লীগের বাছাই করা পােষ্য।
আওয়ামী লীগের ওপর তলায় যারা আছেন, তারা আরাে জঘন্য। যাদের মুক্ত করেছেন সেই জনসাধারণের মেরুদণ্ড ভেঙ্গে তারা আজ ফুলেফেঁপে উঠেছেন। অবশ্য তাদের অসদুপায়ে অর্জিত অর্থ আজ সহসা বিলিয়ে দিলেও সাধারণ মানুষের অবস্থা তাতে ভাল হবে না। প্রতিটি মানুষ কেবল নিজের কথাই ভাবছে — ভাবছে আগামীকাল তার কি হবে ?
শুনতে রূঢ় হলেও কিসিঞ্জার ঠিক কথাই বলেছেন : “বাংলাদেশ একটা আন্তর্জাতিক ভিক্ষার ঝুলি।” ত্রাসজনক পরিস্থিতিতে বাংলাদেশ সরকার বর্তমান বিপর্যয়ের মােকাবেলা করার চেষ্টা করছেন।
আন্তর্জাতিক সমাজ তার পুতুল বাংলাদেশ সম্পর্কে ধৈর্যহারা হয়ে পড়েছে। গত ৩২ মাসের রিলিফ প্রচেষ্টা ব্যর্থ হয়েছে — এই কঠোর সত্যের মুখােমুখি হয়ে রিলিফকর্মী এবং কুটনৈতিক মিশন ও জাতিসংঘের অফিসাররা বাংলাদেশ সরকার ও বাংলাদেশের লােকদেরকেই দোষারােপ করছেন॥"— জনাথন ডিম্বলবী / নিউ স্টেটসম্যান (লণ্ডন) - সেপ্টেম্বর ২৭, ১৯৭৪
