Hello, all.

The 5th working group meeting for the CBD Global Biodiversity Framework is approaching. I haven't been involved in the process but found out that human-wildlife Co flict is in the target 4. However, no concrete indicators was given when reading the report of the meeting of the informal group on the post 2020 global Biodiversity Framework.

I am wondering anyone in this group is involved in? Or, do we(iucn specialists group) have common ideas to deliver?

I look forward to hearing  your advice.

All the best,
Anya

Dear Anya:

Thanks for raising this issue. I was also wondering what targets should be used, how they can realistically be measured, and what the baselines would be. My concern is that (unlike e.g. protected area coverage as %) we have little measurable indicators of success that are widely used. I/we have made some attempt at identifying quantitative and qualitative indicators but, of course, these are contextually driven and are not necessarily direct causal links.

Regards,
Brandon

Dear Anya,

Thank you for your message. The IUCN SSC Human-Wildlife Conflict & Coexistence Specialist Group is the proposed institution for coordinating the development and delivery of the indicator for HWC for Target 4 as part of UNEP-WCMC’s compilation of data relating to headline indicators.

We have produced several information documents on the inclusion of a target on human-wildlife conflict and developing indicators for such a target. All the documents can be accessed on our Policies page here: https://www.hwctf.org/policies

Best wishes,

James

There is a whole IUCN Human Wildlife Conflict and Coexistence specialist group that have been very active in this discussion to get HWC into the framework. The discussion over indicators is very complex and challenging, with many different lobby groups pushing for very different approaches – but the HWCC SG is on the case.
