Dear Joe,

Thank you for submitting your course proposal to teach with the Experimental College for the Fall 2020 semester. Unfortunately, the Experimental College Board is unable to offer you a lecturer position at this time.

This year, we received an abundance of wonderful proposals. The selection process is always difficult as it must include, along with budgetary considerations, such administrative concerns as curriculum balance, student interest, and overlap with courses in other departments. Selecting from a large number of high-quality proposals has never been an easy thing to do, and it seems to get harder every year.

Once again, thank you for your interest in the Experimental College. If you would like to receive feedback on your proposal for the next application cycle, please contact us in June.

Sincerely,

Howard

I just had the call with Howard Woolf and got his feedback.  It's very actionable.

First, for context: There were 70 proposals for 15 slots.  Howard himself liked the proposal!  There were two other faculty reviewers. Of these, one loved it and thought that this is an important growing field.  The other was also taken with it BUT worried that there was some overlap with what is already happening in the Education department.  That's a key filter criterion: they don't want to have overlap.

So... as a revision strategy (1) Have a look at what is going on in the Education department, and the related Human Developmentt and Child Studies department (and any other relevant depts., like Media).  (2) Make it more clear how the material in this course complements that stuff.  (3) Make sure we have a clear Unique Selling Proposition (e.g., whether that's around work experience or media production or whatever it happens to be).

Because of what I'm working on now, I also asked him about whether there had been any courses in the Ex. Col. about programming and computer science.  He said, yes, there have been a couple of peer-taught courses on CS. He's going to retrieve the 2 syllabuses for those and send them to me as examples.

The next round of submissions is due sometime in August, we should check the details, and in my opinion, it's worth it to revise and resubmit.

We can also, naturally, consider what we've learned in our two online pilots (... and possibly invite some of the "alums" like Chris Meadows to participate as guest speakers or to suggest revisions).

As a way to make this extra work worthwhile, I'd also suggest — in true peeragogical style — to design a course *we* would like to take, and plan to run one more online pilot with the submitted version.

Hi Joe,

Can you send me the original proposal or links for reference?

Coming in a bit late I am a bit confused about the background. Not sure how to offer feedback or ideas.

Thanks.

Sure, I should have included that!  For archival reasons I'm sharing a copy, but this is editable so please feel free to modify it.
Meanwhile the course syllabus for the first pilot is here:
This document has a bit of chaos going on!

Charlie may have separate info from the second pilot.

This is so encouraging Joe! Thank you for following through on that with Howard Wolf. Count me in for a revision and in the meantime I will take a look at the other department offerings you mentioned.
