Hello all,

I hope you’ll indulge me with a question to the group. Are there any hereditary peers – or members of their families – alive today that you would particularly be interested to read an interview with, or to learn more about on a personal and familial level? Are there any such individuals who you think ought to be paid more attention? Or those who are a bit over-exposed?

I am asking for a good reason but one that I cannot as yet divulge; in time this will become apparent!

I’d be very interested in any thoughts at all – specifically about families within the hereditary peerage, rather than the royal family or the baronetage or wider gentry.

Thanks as ever, in advance,
Eleanor

Alas only domestic families (or those living abroad with domestic titles) apply on this occasion – but thank you!

Eleanor,

I would always be interested to read an interview with any of the HERVEY family, Marquesses of Bristol (with the exception of the over-exposed and not particularly interesting Lady Victoria). They are an odd lot. I can't find the quote now- perhaps someone can help me out- but wasn't it an old saying that 'there are two kinds of people- the Herveys and everyone else'? The saying bears witness to their extreme eccentricity and general rule-breaking over multiple generations.

Jesse.

Beg pardon, I've just found the quote, in Wikipedia of all places!

" The 18th-century phrase "When God created the human race, he made men, women and Herveys" is attributed variously to French philosopher Voltaire and to Lady Mary Wortley Montagu. It has been read as a reference to the second Lord Hervey's noted originality and eccentricity, but has been applied to the family throughout the centuries. According to the Dictionary of National Biography, the Hervey family have been described as "active and brave, but reckless and overconfident ... greatly addicted to intrigue ..."

Thanks Jesse – the Bristols are a great thought, and I quite agree! That line is an absolute zinger. If you are interested in Victor and John Bristol there is a great book by Marcus Scriven called Splendour & Squalor which has two very good Hervey chapters in it.

More suggestions like these please – the more the merrier!

I recall the sixth marquess in Monaco in the early eighties. A strange man.

Eleanor,

I'm always interessted into the joint hereditary lord great chamberlains, even though currently only 4 of the 13 individuals are peers.

If you are interested in wacky individuals, how about Lord Burford, heir to the Duke of St Albans, who caused a stir in October 1999 by leaping on to the Woolsack in the House of Lords Chamber to protest about the bill to remove the hereditary peers? See e.g. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Beauclerk_(author)

Thanks David!

They needn’t be specifically wacky, I was really asking if there was anyone that anyone here would particularly love to read more about for any reason, anyone underrated or missed by scholars in this field. Any and all suggestions gladly welcomed!
