Here is one last report on the baronets in Debrett's 2019.

There are 23 baronetices that Debrett's 2019 shows as either "dormant" or "dormant or extinct."  One other baronetcy, Warren, is shown as active, but is, in fact, dormant.  Here is the status of each of them:

THE FOLLOWING ARE BARONETCIES THAT ARE DORMANT OR EXTINCT (YEAR IN PARENTHESIS) WHICH SHOW NO MALE DESCENDANTS:

Abercromby (2003), Beaumont (2011), Blunt (2004), Dixie (1975), James (1979), Power (1836 baronetcy (1928), Smith (1809 baronetcy (1993), Staples (2013)

THE FOLLOWING ARE BARONETCIES THAT ARE DORMANT OR EXTINCT WHICH SHOW NO DESCENDANTS AT ALL:

Cope (1972), Speelman (2005)

The rest:

Burnett (1626 baronetcy) (D 1959) -- Sir Alexander William Burnett Ramsay, 7th Bt. (b. 1938) is presumed heir.  He would be the 15th baronet of this baronetcy

Currie (D 2014)-- Per DB: "Due to conflicting information over the exact dates of marriage of Donald Mark Currie, who dvp 1994, the el. son of 7th Bt., it is not clear who is the rightful heir to the baronetcy."  He had 2 sons: Mark Donald THEIS (b. Aug 2, 1970, adopted by his stepfather) from his 2nd marriage and Bradley Mark HIGGINS (b. June 15, 1983) from his 3rd marriage. (Donald Currie used his stepfather's surname of HIGGINS.)

(von) Friesendorff (D 1670).  Although DB lists it as "dormant," it names Rickard Fredrik Knut von Friesendorff (b. Dec. 16, 1937) as the de jure 11th Bt.  His only biological son, Johan Fredrik (b. 1966) is ha.  Johan has 3 sons: Carl Adam Fredrik (b. 1993--not in remainder) and twins David Johan (heir to the heir) and Rickard Ragnar, b. Feb. 13, 1996

Gordon (1631 baronetcy) (D 1956)-- Philip Michael Sutherland Gordon (b. 1946) is listed as "probable heir to baronetcy."  HP would be his cousin (or kinsman?) Huntly Sutherland Gordon (b. 1937).  No sons.  3 others in remainder, yst born 1981.

Hay (1635 baronetcy) (D 1966) "Presumed heir" is the Marquess of Tweeddale.

Mackenzie (1890 baronetcy)  Not "officially" shown as D or E, but 4th Bt. died in 1993 and "succession to the baronetcy has not been established."  Only 2 males are shown James William Guy Mackenzie (gs of 2nd Bt) (b. 1946) and his brother Alan Walter (b. 1952).

Parkyns (D 1926)-- Per DB: "Although the existence of an heir is probable...a right to the Baronetcy has not yet been officially established."  Senior male  is Garling Alfred Parkyns, a 5x great-grandnephew of 3rd Bt.  He has 2 sons, Allan John (b. 1959) and Geoffrey Thomas (b. 1962)

Rich (D 1983)-- Several male descendants shown. Heir may or may not be a male descendant of Claude Rich (d. 1993) but not much information shown

Somerville (D 1929) John Thomas Somerville (b. May 10, 1957) is listed as "probably 9th Bt." His son/ha and grandson/heir to heir are both named John Thomas (b. Nov 23, 1982 and Aug 23, 2013, respectively.)

Stirling (D 1949)-- John Charles Stiriling (b. 1948) is listed as"prospective heir to the baronetcy."  (He would be the 10th Bt.)  He has a son/ha Jeffrey Dundas (b. 1969) and 2 grandsons: Jake Andrew (b. 2001, heir to the heir) and Luke Spencer (b. 2002)

Trevelyan (1662 baronetcy) (D 1976)-- Held by Sir Peter John Trevelyan, 6th Bt as the de jure 12th Bt. here.

Warren-- Still shown as an active baronetcy, but the 9th Bt. died in 2006 (I believe).  Male descendants are shown but it's a pretty confusing situation.

Wolseley (1745 baronetcy) (D 1991-- similar to Warren situation

Wyvill (D 1774) --similar to Warren situation

The (von) Friedendorff baronetcy had been dormant since 1670 ( 349 years).

Is that the longest period of time from a baronetcy becoming dormant to coming out of dormancy?

Thanks.

I wonder whether the Trevelyan of Wallington Baronets have been reluctant to claim the Trevelyan of Nettlecombe Baronetcy because of the  intervening (genealogically) American branch, senior to Sir Geoffrey, descended from a Trevelyan born before marriage but legitimated by subsequent marriage. Under English law this apparently does not entitle them to the Baronetcy, but there may be some confusion about that?

Can someone tell me how Claude Rich fits into the family genealogy? The last Debrett's I have is 2011, and I do not find him there, or in the 1971 Debrett's.

On a related note: in the 2011 Debrett's, Urquhat David Gordon Rich, born 1934, is listed as living. It seems he died in 1988, and is buried iwth his mother.

In addition to those listed by Brooke I recently came across the ROBERTS baronetcy of Glassenbury (E 1620). Apparently extinct on the death of the 6th Baronet in 1745, it is claimed by the Roberts baronets cr 1809, Debrett's 2003 gives the following in the notes about the 1809 baronetcy: Sir Walter, 6th Bt, who left an only daughter, Jane, who married 3rd Duke of St Albans. About 1775 the Duchess believed she had discovered the descendants of Thomas, 2nd son of the 1st baronet, seated at Brightfieldstown, Roberts' Cove, co Cork; and the title was assumed by the then head of that family, Randal, and subsequently by his eldest son Thomas, to whom, however, a new patent of Baronetcy was passed in 1809.

Presumably there is some issue with the evidence as the claim has not been officially established at the Heralds' College.

Cokayne believed that this second Roberts family was unrelated:

"Jane, his da. and eventually his sole h., m., 23 Oct. 1752, George (Beauclerk) 3d DUKE OF St. Albans, but d. s.p. Dec. 1788, and was bur. at Cranbrook. The manor of Glassenbury passed, under her will, to Thomas Roberts of the co. of Cork, her Grace being apparently under the impression that he was of her family, inasmuch as his great great grandfather, the Rev. Thomas Roberts, Chancellor of the diocese of Cork [d. 1664, aged about 74), was, in a pedigree (by Hawkins, Ulster, 22 June 1775), made identical with Thomas, 2d s, of the lat Bart. The last mentioned Thomas, however, d. s.p. in 1644. Had such descent been proved, it would have carried with it the Baronetcy of 1611 and the right to the Coat of Arms borne by those Baronets. That pedigree, however, was rejected by the Heralds' College, a new Coat of Arms was granted to him, and the Grantee was cr. a Bart. 20 Sep. 1809, he being described as " of Glassenbury, co. Kent and Brightfieldston, co. Cork.""

Can you say what genealogy they give for him? He is not in the 2011 Debrett's, which is the most recent I have. In that volume the senior male was William (b.1937), but there seemed some question whether there was living issue male of Archibald James Somerville (1803-1871), which would be senior to William. Is John Thomas from Archibald James' line?

Thanks!

I like that Debrett's seems intent on searching for missing heirs. I've seen new lines appear in other cases as well recently. Burke's, on the other hand, just gives up and omists the families entirely. They carried the Somervilles at least through 1959, but by the 2000s the Somervilles were gone.

By the way, the marriage to Harriet Pullis is interesting. William's sister Angel Somerville married an Augustus van Pullis probably related.
