As an American, I was completely captivated by the entire Coronation, from the parade to Westminster Abbey right through to the appearance on the balcony.

Everything about it was perfect, just wonderful.  (Well, maybe except for the bit of rain that fell.)  And seeing the Prince and Princess of Wales, with their family, brings confidence that the monarchy and the traditions will endure well into the future.

To all of those who participated in the events, and to the people of the UK in general, well done.

Long Live the King!

Also: Lord Carrington (Rupert Carington), at least according to a BBC announcer. Andrew Lloyd Webber, Lord Lloyd Webber, whose music was part of the ceremony, was there as well.

I am told Viscount Hereford  was also there.
As photos of the event emerge,we should look for others.
What disappointed me about the ceremony was the inconsistency of dress.Peers(including Royal ones) should have been wearing Coronation robes and coronets. The only coronet I saw was that of the Garter King of Arms and no doubt there was pressure put on him not to wear it,which he resisted.
Similarly with robes of the orders of knighthood. Some wore them, some did not.Blair and Major wore the collar of the order of the garter, not the robes, unlike Winsto Churchill in 1953.
The civil servants involved have forgotten that these matters add to the splendour of the ceremony.

I understand that members of the ordinary congregation (so to speak) were asked to wear collars and stars only (if so entitled) and thus not mantles. Hence, Sir John Major and Sir Tony Blair.

That the Leader of His Majesty's Most Loyal Opposition failed to dress as a K.C.B. (star and badge) is a disgrace – arguably the greatest ceremonial event in our national life for 70 years and either he can't be bothered or he feels he's just too grand for such things.

Though technically the headgear of a king-of-arms is indeed a coronet, I believe it is usually called a crown. I think all four wore their crowns (though only Garter was obvious).

I really appreciate this list of peers with ceremonial functions. But I still think that the number of hereditary peers present at the coronation was clearly insufficient.

I hadn't realised the Earl of Derby attended the Coronation as Vice-Admiral of Lancashire, one of four posts created for the day of the Coronation, the others being Lord High Steward, Lord High Constable and Deputy to the Great Steward of Scotland.  There is a tweet from Knowsley Hall with photos of him wearing naval uniform and cap with a Coronation Robe presumably before setting off for the service.  See para 2.3 of the Commons research briefing on the Coronation -

Robert Harman's excellent new book "New KIng new Court: Charles III the Inside Story" has an interesting chapter in which he discusses the guests at the Coronation - it seems clear that he had access to at least some of the guest lists.

The following additional peers can be identified as having been guests - I'll give the page numbers:

page 256
Duke of Northumberland
Duke of Devonshire

page 279
Lord Mandelson
Lord Boateng
Baroness Rock

page 280
Lord Darling of Roulanish
Lord Butler of Brockwell

page 280 (RH says to represent each grade of the hereditary peerage other than Dukes who were represented on other lists)
Marquess of Huntly
Earl of Derby (already mentioned above)
Viscount Hereford (also mentioned above)
Lord Mowbray, Segrave and Stourton

page 283
Lord Woolley of Woodford

page 287
Lord (and Lady) Bamford

As an aside RH includes an amusing anecdote that some of the uninvited hereditary peers formed a WhatsApp group and shared photographs of themselves wearing their coronation robes and coronets while watching the Coronation

The official Coronation Roll has been produced and presented to the King and Queen -  Watch: King and Queen receive first vegan Coronation Roll (telegraph.co.uk)  - seems bizarre to refer to the Roll as being "vegan" as if one were going to eat it

"Coronation Rolls are a recording of the Coronation proceedings, and have been drawn up since the original Roll was created for the Coronation of Edward II and Queen Isabella in 1308. This was in order to codify the order of ceremonial, to record who was allocated a role at the ceremony (often in return for a position or grant of land, hence the coronation “Claims” to perform services) and a record of attendance, traditionally to show who had pledged loyalty to the new monarch. The National Archives hold the majority of Coronation Rolls. However, there are no Rolls in existence for Edward III, Henry VI, Edward IV, Richard III, Henry VII, Henry VIII, Edward VI, Mary I, Elizabeth I and Charles I. The only subsequent omission is for George III.

Coronation Rolls are drawn up by the Clerk of the Crown, initially in the mediaeval period by a senior clerk of the Chancery (the Royal Secretariat of the time). Many Rolls include the monarch’s oath to govern according to the customs and laws of the realm, and detail the ceremonial of the Coronation – the prayers, the masses, the blessings, the order of service, etc.

All the post-medieval Rolls have in common a recital of claims made (until George II’s reign in Law French) to perform services at coronations, and adjudications made on these claims by a Court of Claims set up ad-hoc to examine them. Most claimants are entitled by hereditary title, personal or tenurial. It is believed that they were stored in the Tower of London together, before being moved to the then Public Record Office sometime in the 19th Century.

The language of the Rolls is often a blend of those languages of record current at the period: mediaeval and early modern period Rolls (1308-1727) are in Latin and French, with English from the Seventeenth century thereafter.”

I had never heard of Coronation Rolls before this popped up. Fascinating information on it after I had a look through. I am guessing since there wont' be any more accounts of the coronation published in the London Gazette, so this is step to access quite a bit of information on this coronation. Now that I realize, maybe the ceremonial published in the London Gazette of previous coronations was also from the Coronation Roll of the time...

Some of these are not peers:
Supreme Court Justices: Lady Arden of Heswall, Lord Carnwath of Notting Hill
Scottish judges: Lord Bonomy, Lord Bracadale, Lord Mulholland
The Earl of Kilmorey (one-time MP Richard Needham) holds a peerage of Ireland - at least when he was an MP, he did not use the title.

The Coronation Roll also has this statement in the section on the Coronation Claims Office's Proceedings which I don't recall seeing mentioned elsewhere:

Of the claims judged to be within scope, thirty-two required further consideration by the Coronation Claims Office. Fourteen of these claims had established an entitlement to perform the service claimed, such that they should be submitted to the Royal Household and the Earl Marshal to consider whether and how such service should be performed on the day of the Coronation. Eleven of these were performed in the ceremony. These were [omitted as they have been covered elsewhere by this group Coronation Claims Office - the results (google.com)]

The other three claims, that were deemed established and to have been submitted by the appropriate person, were not included in the service. These were:

  • Mr Ian Russell MVO, Registrar & Seneschal of the Cinque Ports
For Barons of the Cinque Ports to bear the Canopy of His Majesty, or to perform some service in place of doing so. The Canopy is no longer used in The King’s Procession, but in recognition of the historic role the fourteen Barons were given seats at the service.
  • The Walker Trust
To be Usher of the White Rod at the ceremony. The White Rod is no longer used in The King’s Procession, but in recognition of the historic role the Walker Trust was invited to nominate one representative to attend the Service.
  • The Earl of Shrewsbury & Waterford
To carry a white wand if invited to attend as Lord High Steward of Ireland. There was not a Lord High Steward of Ireland in His Majesty’s Coronation Service, therefore The Earl of Shrewsbury and Waterford did not participate.

Two years on from the Coronation this exhibition at the national Archives, Kew may be on interest:

Happy & Glorious

Happy & Glorious: Coronation Commissions from the Government Art Collection is a joint exhibition between The National Archives and the Government Art Collection, reflecting on the Coronation of Their Majesties King Charles III and Queen Camilla

On display  are two Coronation Rolls – the earliest surviving roll from 1308 and the most recent one from 2023 – alongside recently commissioned artworks from eight leading artists from across the UK, offering their own take on the Coronation’s significance to them and their communities.
