I am in the process of installing a Raymarine linear below deck
autopilot with the short ram rod.

According to the instructions the short ram rod can turn the rudder 30°
port and starboard. The original mahogany rudder stops are positioned so
that the rudder will turn more than 30° and I don't want the ram to go
past the 30°.

Is it possible to program the pilot control so that the autopilot stops
itself at 30° port and starboard?

As it is, I have to mount the autopilot's motor upside down and I had to
cut a slot into the big mahogany cockpit support to allow the ram to
reach the Buck-Algonquin bronze tiller arm.

Yeah, I maybe should have called a Raymarine dealer to do the
installation, but competent electricians are scarcer than hens' teeth.

Thoughts/suggestions?

I expect you will “teach” it during the on the water trials.  During this process you”ll be asked to turn the wheel all the way in each direction.  That’s how the Garmin learns where to stop pushing.

1st time I used mine it would send the her circles, thought I'd have to get a man in, lol. Go into settings and find calibration, will ask you to go full left, then full right, then centre. Will then do it on its own to check. Easier to do while stationary, but had to do mine a couple of times under sail when the clamp on the rudder came loose.

Agreed, and was the same for me with my Garmin.  So determine first how far you will turn the rudder each way to go only 30 degrees, and then during setup when told to do so, ONLY go that far each way and they will be the stopping points for the AP.

Thanks everyone,

I had to lower the quadrant and move the steering cable sheeves down 2 inches to fit the tiller arm and allow the connection of the autopilot ram to clear the sheeves.

I am 73 and doing any work behind the engine or around the rudder post to change the packing is what I call my "boat yoga".

Wow George, that is impressive! I need to mount a rudder reference on my quadrant but I have not yet learned the appropriate yoga position!
