I have a 155 Genny and a newish loose footed main and I can’t seem to dial in my sail trim to get good results at 90-120 AWA. Talking about winds up to 12 knots or so. I use my toerail mounted tracks for these points of sail and deeper, inner tracks for close reaching.
Anyone have any go to source for trim guides other than trial and error?

I like sail power by wallace ross and the book from the North "go fast" course.

With a 155 genoa I'm surprised you see an advantage to using the inner track, The clew portion of the genny pulled back in represents negative lift.
After 90+ AWA I think it gets a little bit harder to keep a big genoa full, but it will still pull, at some point it will become more of a parachute and rely on the drag to go downwind. Wing and Wing works pretty well on Puffin and then it's a vector math problem with direct downwind vs. gybing downwind.
Asym's and symmetrical's are a lot of fun. Asyms easier to rig, Syms easier to tune with a wider range of wind direction.

Polars help with the optimum course decisions.

Agree on the Wallace Ross book "Sail Power".

There's lots of adjustments to tweak.  Halyard tension, backstay (headstay sag), mainsail trim (don't choke off the slot...)  but the low hanging fruit for the genoa as you sail deeper angles is probably moving the genoa car forward on the track?  That helps control the top of the genoa which is twisting off as you ease the sheet.  The correct position of the car for a broad reach is probably several feet forward of the upwind position.

Guy, love seeing the chart with my old stomping ground! Lots of fun shoals to avoid, and then of course, there’s Misery island!

Jim;
I can't quite think of the obstructions in Salem/Beverly harbor area as fun. I started racing Puffin in the Thursday night series out of Jubilee this year, it's been quite the learning experience and humbling too. Lots of very experienced competitors in the series.

I also like Sail like a Champion by Dessin Connor, lots of detail about crew roles and repeatable performance. Marking car locations, halyards, sheets etc.

Guy, for what it's worth, the JYC Thursday night racing is remarkably competitive. Even back when weekend racing was a big deal with big fleets, if you could do well on Thursday nights, you could own the weekends. You're right about a lot of experienced competitors in the series.

I used to race on a friend's boat at Jubilee Yacht Club about 25 years ago. It was a lot of fun.  My friend long since moved his boat down to RI where my boat is, but it was good sailing and a good club.

Yes, JYC is a good club and the competition on Thursday nights is strong.
I've only been hit once so far :>( with minor damage to the boat that hit us.

Hi Guy (and anyone else who races in the Salem/Beverly/Marblehead area),

I should be available during the 2025 season as fill-in crew.  I have racing experience and currently own Orion, a P 36-1 moored in Salem.

Best,
Jim
