The below picture is of my mizzen gooseneck.  The silver part goes on a track on the mizzen mast, and I can move it up and down.  I replaced the track with a longer one in 2024, but the little spring button thingy (on the right side) still slips out of the holes.  Because of this, I can't maintain the height of the mizzen boom.

I would like to replace the spring button with a thumb screw, but how do I remove the spring button?  It looks like the shaft was put into place and then the head was pressed in place.  I do not see a way to remove the head cleanly.

Suggestions?

Jeff

It looks as if the very top was pressed or peened over. Can that be ground off?

You need to lift the button to move it correct?
And the track just has hole recesses.  The spring drives the plunger into the hole recesses?

Do you have more pictures?

to reinstall after or permanently?
Like John said, the cap is probably peened on.
Why does it slip out?  Oh, so many jokes....
Is the pin not long enough?  Or sticking and not fully engaging.?
Have you tried penetrating oil and maybe some heat to get it to move freely and fully engage? and working it in and out with the oil to flush out any contaminants

It looks like it is not fully seated.  There appears to be a gap between the button top and the cylinder..

If you really want to remove it, you can probably grind the top of the button where the shaft goes through and put a socket under the pin on the bottom and drive it out with a punch and hammer.

Good luck,

Dave, Yes, you lift the button. The problem is that the portion that goes into the holes in the track no longer holds the book in place. Either the spring isn't strong enough, or the pin doesn't go far enough into the hole. If I remove the pin, that leaves me with something I should be able to thread to accept a screw.

Grinding the top of the button might be the way to go
