Hello:

I have a 1985 Pearson 36-2 with Edson wheel steering. I can't figure out how to access the sheaves that are located under the pedestal so I can inspect and lubricate them. I can access the quadrant easily enough, but there's a bulkhead in front of the quadrant that prevents access to the underside of the pedestal.

Has anyone figured this out?

Thanks,
Darren

I think it's the same setup as the 10M.
You have to  climb into the starboard sail locker equipped with a flashlight and mirror to see them.   A bigger handheld mirror is best.
I think there was a pegboard panel in my  boat that was gone by the time I got it between the locker and the fuel tank.
You may still have that panel in place.

That's 36-2 not 36.  Different boat.

I thought there was a box-shaped cover on the underside of the cockpit accessible from the aft cabin berth.

Dan is correct - much different boat than the original 36. The 36-2 has no starboard seat locker as the aft cabin prevents one. The quadrant is found at the rear of the port seat locker and behind an aft bulkhead. If memory serves the bottom pedestal sheaves are accessed  in the aft area of the aft cabin,to starboard, as the picture Dan posted shows. I never accessed  that area on my buddy's boat, but accessed most everywhere else while installing radar on the boat.

Thanks, everyone. I finally figured it out and was a little embarrassed that it was so obvious! Yes, it is accessible by removing the box-shaped cover on the underside of the cockpit accessible from the aft cabin berth. Yet another reason to love this boat.

The sheaves look like they're in good shape, but one of them only rolls when the cable is moving forward. When the cable is moving aft, there's not enough tension to engage the sheave, so the cable just slides through. If I put some tension on the cable, the sheave rolls easily.

I can't decide if this is a problem. The cable has about 2" of play between the quadrant and the sheaves, and I checked the tension as Edson recommends: "tension is best when you cannot move the quadrant by hand with the wheel locked in place."

Sounds like you just need some more tension on the cable.  Is there room for adjustment?

You have a very comfy place to work on the steering.  I would tighten the cable and then take a nap.

Make sure that sheave isn't binding.
After your nap.  😃

Sure, there's room for more tension. I'll tighten it up a bit and see how it goes.

Thanks,
Darren

Done! Three more turns on the adjusting bolt at the quadrant, and the sheave rolls in both directions.

Thanks for your suggestions.
