Hello,
I have owned a 1987 P31-2 (#92) for 6 years. I am moored in the Fore River in Weymouth, MA.
I would like to add a bimini for next season.
Wondering if any other 31-2 owners could send me pictures of their biminis? The pictures will help me understand how many bows to have, and how to attach the bimini to the railings.
Another question: When my mainsail is hoisted the boom is 72" above the cockpit sole. The pedestal is not very far aft of the boom. So there is a question of whether I can have a bimini that goes under the boom or whether it should end just a few inches aft of the boom so I can have clearance > 72". How high do people recommend their biminis be?

Comments would be welcome. I appreciate the assistance.

My bimini ('89 31-2 #212) is above/aft of the boom. 3 bow, short, zippered splits for split backstay. Here it is, uncovered, at our (crappy with no lift well) haulout last year. Also a photo sailing with the canvas on.

I like the bimini to be at least 6" above my head, maybe more to give some feeling of air flow and space.

This was installed on the boat when I got it and is over 15 years old now, but still going...I have a repair guy :)   It works great for us, lots of head room till you get to the Dodger.  The boom will hit the bimini if topping lift is let down all the way, so tacking is a bit of a pain, but I'm looking at cutting  the main this winter to fix that. I've made a lot of changes to it over the years to accommodate design mistakes in the original, such as how the stern windows open now from the middle to the outside so that I'm not climbing out of a V shaped opening all the time as it was with the original, raising my grab bar 8" on the dodger to avoid head hits, doubling the bimini window on top so as to save my neck cramps, etc.  And there's many more things I would do it I ever end up going new!  If you wish to discuss this on the phone, contact me here and we'll arrange it.

here's another picture, wouldn't let me do both at once.  I have more should you need a specific area.  DSCF0187.JPG

Hi Mike,
Here is a picture of our bimini.  There is plenty of headroom, it is forward of the boom and helps shade passengers.  No need for a dodger in this part of the world.

Bimini+ connecter+dodger w/full enclosure on our 1988 and also without the connecter and boom since this was a spring launch pic. Usually the connecter and isonglass panels come off during the summer, connecter goes back on when too hot or raining. However, we were traveling into North Michigan waters this summer and wanted the panels on at night for warmth and to keep the bugs out. A couple things that I would improve on:
1. Viewing window for the sail is only something like 12"x12". In this case, larger really is better.
2. Our bimini structure is stainless steel 100% vs some have a strap at the front to clip on the deck. Since we have a split back stay the ability to collapse the bimini is mute. Our pontoon at home has the front strap so perhaps I am biased and feel the strap method cheapens the bimini structure. Also, the rigid structure provides a great structure for my 2x70w solar panels.
3. Make sure the bimini near the front is high enough to not bump your head but low enough to be able to use your vang like it should be when/if you need it.
Hope this helps. I do not have measurements,  my boat is 4 hrs away and I will not be back up til next wk.

I found this rough drawing of my bimini-connecter-dodger measurements for figuring out what solar panels would fit to give me the max solar output. I hope this helps in your planning along with my attached pics from my previous response.
