Hello Rubyists,

It's that time again - we have a special guest speaker from the Seattle Ruby Brigade this month here to talk to us about cloud functions and cats.

Join us tomorrow night from 6-9pm PDT: https://jitsi.thejonanshow.com/pdxrb

To be perfectly honest I thought hard about cancelling this one in light of all that is going on in the world. I ultimately decided that it may serve as a welcome respite to those who are able to attend, and that community is just as important now as it has always been, if not more so. If you're not feeling up to it or feel your time may be better spent fighting fascism know that I support you, and we'll be here for you next month and every month thereafter come hell of high water.

We have to abandon Jitsi this month due to some DNS issues:

Hi my name is Bob Lehman and I have been part of the PDX Ruby community for quite a while and I want to do 2 things.

1). Thank Jonan for holding the meeting tonight, anything but chaos and Covid is a welcome change.

2). Having just send the line above I would like to throw something out to see if people wanted to talk about it tonight after the main presentation.  I did reach out to Jonan before sending this to see if he felt it was ok and he indicated that he thought it would be worth doing as well. It is not a technology topic but a people topic and or a question.  So here it goes:

How do we involve and help People of Color be more accepted in our community?   When I say this I mean the general Portland Technical community and specifically the Ruby world and having Technical Jobs.

I ask this because I know I personally have not done enough or said enough.  I would like to change that.  I am not sure how, but at least acknowledging the existence of a problem and looking for how to address it is a start.

  1. Can we do more outreach to get people to attend the monthly, weekly daily Portland technical meetups (Of course this one specifically)

    1. We need to start earlier with kids

      1. Daytime/weekend meetups targeted at them

      2. Make them meeting places super accessible – note sure where that is

      3. Provide the hands on technology and people for the events

        1. If we can fund fund, let them take it home with them afterwards

      4. Make sure it is safe for them to get there and get home

  2. Can we mentor/sponsor people, schools, clubs, something else.

    1. See above

    2. How do we become mentors? do they want mentors? Is there something better?

    3. Can we create a scholarship(s) – I know it is not an end solution but money is always an barrier.

  3. Can we get very brave people of color to come speak to us (I know I would be scared to make that presentation)to let us know what we do that we probably do not even realize we do every day that puts them at a disadvantage in the workforce, technical community and in general at an up coming meeting - again if the group is willing.

  4. Jobs, how can we help/encourage/include POC in internships, hiring cycles, recruiting...?  I am not saying charity. I am not saying take a job away from someone else, I am saying helping people who want to be helped. Look at your requirements a different way.

  5. If you work with a Person of Color

    1. Walk them out to their car ( I will tell a story in the meeting)

    2. Take them to lunch

    3. Find out about them – anything

  6. Can we build anything (high tech, low tech not tech, don’t care)that will help people vote or help people get information in their hands. This is a build and start locally, deploy nationally sort of idea.

Any other thing anyone wants to say or do about this is welcome. I want to save this for the end of the discussion tonight so those who feel it is not appropriate can have the benefit of the technical discussion and feel free not to participate in this.

Thank you for reading this far and I look forward to hearing what you have to say.

Oh and of course in keeping with tonight theme a picture of one of my cats.  Not meant to be a creepy glamor shot though I do believe he thinks he is a bit of a diva.

That was a great and welcome meeting, discussion and presentation last night.  Thank you to all of those who showed up.

Discussion:

I was glad to see people being willing to have the conversation - it was important to me to be able to speak with people in my world to see how they fealt regarding this.  It is very easy right now to get locked in the cave and not appreciate the rest of the world.  I am happy to have further discussion and meetups (virtual for now and physical when we can).

Presentation:

This was great - a very simple straightforward demonstration of what is some fairly amazing capabilities under the covers in an inviting and engaging way.  I am definitely going to check out the Functions Framework

https://github.com/GoogleCloudPlatform/functions-framework-ruby

Fortunately it will be raining this weekend so I think I will try find something simple and silly to do with this for fun.  Probably not going to try and jam an entire Rails App into it.  Its been done.  So have to come up with something else.

Thanks again for showing up and I look forward to attending next months meeting and many more in the future.
