shouldn't be an issue, as soon as you are back within internet coverage,
things are being sync'ed. You will not run both machines at the same
time with one being offline, won't you?

That could very well be. I can only speak about Pat. Pat runs on all
OSes and would most probably support that. The Winlink FAQ [1] says that
Winlink Express supports it as well. But if you wanna mix Winlink
Express and Pat, and have all in sync, you're probably on your own.
As already mentioned, Winlink (the mail system) is being invented for
e-mail access at remote locations using low-bandwidth and high-latency
HF radio links. That excludes features IMAP has.
You could ask your mail partners to Cc to a regular mail address and use
that to keep your mails in sync. Thunderbird for example supports
offline usage. Naturally, this requires some "mail discipline" by
everyone involved.
Or approach the Winlink team. They have a feature
"""
Alternate (temporary forwarding) e-mail
E-Mail address to which mail received by your account will be forwarded.
This may be a valid internet e-mail address, a Winlink tactical address,
or callsign. The entry must include the prefix "SMTP:" if the entry is
an internet email address. Leave blank to disable forwarding and allow
normal delivery.
"""
already. Maybe they want to implement a permanent
"copy-incoming-messages" feature in the system.
