FYI, a "Home Lost Filesystem" web site. It's a small all-volunteer non-profit that grew out of the 2003 and 2007 San Diego fires.  

There are instructions on how to build the box yourself, but they are also raising money and planning to build boxes to distribute.

FYI - This is the home loss file system that our friends developed after they lost their home in 2003.  I’m told it’s really helpful.  We’ve donated to the GoFundMe campaign.

Along with a group of friends and others who, like me, have experienced the devastation of losing a home, The Out of The Ashes volunteer organization once again is spearheading an effort to help hundreds of fire survivors throughout Los Angeles.

We are providing these survivors with a Home Loss File System—a portable file box with pre-labeled folders to help organize and store important documents like forms, receipts, contracts, insurance information, applications, and more. This system brings order during what can feel like an overwhelming and chaotic time. In addition, we’ve included worksheets and helpful information to guide people through the complicated and challenging recovery process.

In past years, we have distributed thousands of these systems to fire survivors, and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. People are so grateful for the clarity and sense of control they gain when they can keep their critical documents in one place. Additionally, thanks to Jamie, Ross, and Julia, we now have a digital version of the file system available as well!
