Wonder what's changed over the past week. Will Musk's departure help?  Will Voight survive?  Will the Senate step up?  Should we change any of our strategies?  Doesn't seem that the numbers of cuts mean a lot to the MAGA nation.

I agree that numbers are sometimes falling on deaf ears. We need to get the public pissed off by talking about the consequences of the lower staffing numbers, with specific examples in specific parks wherever possible. Focus on (among other things):

  • Reduced visitor services (visitor center hours, ranger-led programs, clean restrooms, fast entry through entrance stations, etc.) – at least after summer seasonals go off duty.
  • Reduced response times to emergencies.
  • Deterioration of facilities, including historic structures.
  • Increase in poaching, pot-hunting and relic-hunting.
  • Economic impacts, especially in gateway communities, concessions and with smaller service providers like tour guides, river trips, climbing guides.

And, harp on the Secretary of the Interior’s testimony that NPS sites other than National Parks are less valued, less visited, unimportant and expendable.

Phil:

What Trump, and Vought – and Musk – have counted on was that even the guys and gals that worked on road projects funded by federal dollars actually got their paychecks from a local contractor, NOT the government.

For the most part, people do not see tangible evidence of the federal government in their lives except the FISA deduction on their paycheck and the always looming April 15. If they watch tv – and almost everyone but Meko does – they get frequent reminders of the perpetual presence of law enforcement agencies should they misstep.

Frankly, the government doesn’t sound like much of a friend to anybody. True, you can join the Army, Navy, Marines, or whatever to bootstrap your way out of poverty, but that’s not the “real” government and with  that same tv showing endless wars and public service announcements about frightful suicide rates, that’s not the “honor and glory” of World War II.

You and I know I sometimes groused that our own paychecks could have been larger in private employment – but we also knew that most forms of private employment would not satisfy that inner urge to give something of ourselves for something greater than ourselves.

Trump and Vought – and maybe especially Musk – cannot imagine something more important than themselves. Their inevitable death will extinguish what they think matters most.  And the world will go on without them. Their money and power can’t conquer that.

For us, who chose to labor in government, in behalf of people we will never know, our names will likely not linger but our legacy will be people and places that are somewhat better for our passing.

We helped. That’s enough – and far more than Donald or Russell or Elon will leave in their wakes. As any sailor knows, even the largest wakes fade.

I almost always talk about those very points. I am flying in to D C. tomorrow to meet with Senator Tillis Tuesday afternoon.  I spoke with E&E News yesterday about the NPS Budget.  Afterwards I ask the reporter if we might have coffee after I arrive early tomorrow afternoon. So we are going to do that.  I think I will pick her brain.
