Google PageSpeed Insights has a problem with one of my client's websites: www.searchscientists.com

Whenever I try to create a PSI report, I get "An error occurred while fetching or analyzing the page."

I also tried the API, but I got the following JSON response:
{
 "error": {
  "errors": [
   {
    "domain": "global",
    "reason": "internalError",
    "message": "An error occurred while fetching or analyzing the page."
   }
  ],
  "code": 500,
  "message": "An error occurred while fetching or analyzing the page."
 }
}

Some subpages show a PSI report, but the frontpage doesn't ...

Can anyone help me figure out why this is happening?

Thanks :)

Howdy Sigurður.

Our renderer is having a tough time with that page. I am not entirely sure that is going wrong.

I do notice that your site is giving an error about using document.write in an asynchronous script. This is a not allowed and may be causing the problem:

conversion.js:19
Failed to execute 'write' on 'Document': It isn't possible to write into a document from an asynchronously-loaded external script unless it is explicitly opened.

I found the following documentation that talks about using conversion_async.js instead of conversion.js:

Hey Dave,

Thanks for the response.

Yeah, I noticed the same thing. The client uses Google Tag Manager to add the Google Adwords conversion script - I'll ask him to check his Tag MAnager and see if he has some manual AdWords scripts.

I'll let ya know if that's the problem.

Hey Dave,

To check if this was the case, I removed the Google Tag MAnager tag .. the JS warning goes away, but PSI is still unable to render the page (or give results).
So that's not the issue :(

Short of ripping the page apart, piece by piece, I have no idea what can be causing this in PSI.

Dave, do you have access to the PSI logs?

Hmm .. I am sometimes able to get the desktop score to display, but it seems that this is being caused in the mobile part.

I tried accessing the website from my android mobile phone, and it worked properly (using the built in "Internet" browser).

Any ideas?
