Hello Paddlers,

I'm holed up on the South Shore during this pandemic, and am thinking of going canoeing with my household on the Pleasant River.  I've looked at the Pleasant River (River Route 7) in the Paddle Lunenburg/Queens publication, and it show a nice little route from Highway 208 to Molega Lake.  Outside of the main rapids, is the rest stillwater? Can it be easily paddled in either direction?  But my main question is, what's Pleasant River like north of Highway 208?  Can one get up to the pending Pleasant River Nature Reserve?  I'd love to hear from someone who was run the Upper Pleasant River.

Thanks,

Tristan

It may make more sense for me to wait until the State of Emergency has been lifted, and things get back to normal for this trip.  Maybe now is a better time to plan canoe trips, then to actually go on canoe trips.  But I'm still interested in getting some info on the Pleasant River.  Thanks!

Hi Tristan,

I’ve paddle the Pleasant River from Pleasant River Lake down the Greenfield. Nice trip. There are two falls on the section between the Lake and HWY 208. The first being Glode Falls (sp?) and  a second ( I don’t know if it has a name). It has been a while for me since running Glodes, I recall it was ok. The second falls, which is near the Hwy 208, can be a bit of a bump and grind. If we get enough rain in the spring you can successfully run right up to the May long weekend. To get to the lake take the woods road (Lake Pleasant Road) at Simpson’s Corner.

The lower section does have a  number of rapids, mostly runnable. If you choose not to, they are either a very short portage or a short lift/ rope it through kind of thing.

One unfortunate aspect, much of the route, especially the lower section, is developed and makes it harder to find camping spots. Traditionally where the river dumps into Molega Lake we used to camp on the point but now that is now somebody’s home!

If you are really adventurous, try the upper section of the Wild Cat River which flows into Pleasant River Lake. (On my bucket list to do)

Good luck.

Ian
