I'm trying to install software through packer and ami is created out of it. This ami I want to use as source ami in packer code so that I can install another software on top of that ami rather than using the default ami. Can anyone suggest how to achieve this?

Just reference the custom AMI in source_ami.

If we use source_ami, is it necessary to give source_ami_filters?

No you should use only one of them. (source_ami will take precedence over source_ami_filters).
