Hello Packer community!

We are super happy to share with everyone the release of Packer v1.5.2, the first release for 2020. The 1.5.2 release is a continuation of the HCL2 and information sharing work started in 1.5.0 and comes packed to the gills with improvements and bug fixes all across the board; not to mention some long awaited features  🎉

New Features:

The vsphere-iso builder that leverages the VSphere API for image creation, previously maintained by JetBrains, has been merged into Packer and it will be officially supported by the Packer team at HashiCorp moving forward.

Full support for HCL2 variables & functions. Users  can now use variables, locals, and functions in their Packer build configurations. See https://packer.io/guides/hcl/variables for more information and examples.

Major Improvements:

Information sharing support for Post-Processors is now available.

The new PACKER_PLUGIN_PATH variable that allows users to define multiple search paths for custom third-party plugin discovery.

Custom key-vault support for the Azure builder for the bring your own key-vault experience.

Major Fixes:

Support for loading third-party plugins defined in a custom packerconfig file

WinRMPassword support for the Azure builder is now configured and available for use with provisioners. Perfect for running those elevated_user scripts.

For full details on all the goodies within 1.5.2, see the changelog: https://github.com/hashicorp/packer/blob/master/CHANGELOG.md#152-february-12-2020

As always, please reach out to us via the GitHub issue tracker if you find anything wrong.

We're really excited about the improvements that these changes will bring to the tool. Thanks for being such a great community to work for, and we hope you have a wonderful holiday season, no matter which ones you celebrate.

Housekeeping note:

We discovered a flaw in our OSX codesigning process after we uploaded binaries and checksums for this release, so we replaced the OSX bins with working ones and updated the checksum file shortly afterwards; you may need to refresh your browser to get the correct osx binaries.

thanks,
The Packer Team
