Hi

I was wondering, if there's equivalent in packer to create an image out of GCE's instance bootable disk?.

Something what gcloud cli suggests, such as
gcloud compute --project=ops-pcp-poc images create image-1 --source-disk=qdb01 --source-disk-zone=us-west1-a

Would source_image=qdb01 work?

Thanks

To my knowledge it's not possible. Do you have an imported boot disk?

Hi

I have a running instance with lots of changes applied manually.
I need that instances disk now to be converted to a bootable image using packer, so that I can consume
that image to launch other instances using that original instance as source of base image.

gcloud cli supports that feature, but I didn't see anything packer docs.

Packer is a automation tool made to create image from a template. Not to create one from a running instance with random manual changes. Just use gcloud for that.

I am not disagreeing to the fact what you are saying about packer.
I was just inquiring if it go extra mile to solve this or add as an feature.

As I mentioned in my original email gcloud does support that creating image from a given source instance's bootable disk and that's what I used it.
