to Packer

Hi

I’m new to Packer and currently using vmware-iso and esx to build my images.

For local testing I want to use a post-processor to output a .box file that will work with virtualbox and vagrant. is this possible? is there any examples i can reference?

I added “provider”: “virtualbox” to my post-processor but this throws an error :frowning:

I can successfully build VMWare images and the vagrant post-processor is outputting a .box file with type = vagrant but when I try it in Vagrant, although the box provider is virtualbox I get an error that it cant open the file.

when I do a vagrant box list it shows it as win2016_master (vmware_desktop, 0)

Thanks
Stephen

Hello.

The idea behind packer is if you use the same way to create a VM, the vms should be the same.

So instead of trying to convert one VM or disk from one format to other, your project could build from ISO 2 VMs. one for VMWare and one for Virtualbox.

You will be able to run the same script to provision the VM, so the resultant VMs should have the same packages.

Also the VMs will require different guest additions, vmware need vmtools, and virtualbox requires vbox guest additions

so just convert the disk or the VM is not optimal.

Alvaro.
