I'm just curious as to what you are using Nano server for. Microsoft have come out and said that non container based Nano server installs have no future so basing any work on this seems futile to me. There's the container version of Nano server added in the semi-annual channel releases but that's even more cut down than the 2016 Nano server version and can only run on containers.

Hi Jordan

Thanks for your repply. My boss want to deploy windows containers in mac os dev environmwnt. All off the developers got mac and I want to know if there is a solution to run docker windows containers in small vms. Do you know if a deployment of packer can do that?.

Regards

No idea if you can do it with the older Nano server but I just have a slim VM image of Server 2016 Core and run containers there. Not the smallest size but it's as small as I can get it currently.

As per the following link:

I can deploy the packer templates but I don't know the way to reduce the size for the deployment. There is a way to change the build in order to run an image with lees space.

Also in the guide shows version of windows images to deploy:

  • 1709 - Windows Server, version 1709 (10.0.16299) Semi annual channel
  • 1803 - Windows Server, version 1803 (10.0.17134) Semi annual channel
As per the instructions I can downloaded but I don't know which link should I use and the specification of them.

This is the way that can be run:

packer build --only=vmware-iso --var iso_url=~/path-to-1709.iso windows_server_1709_docker.json

Sorry if I ask too many thing but is the fisrt there I interect with windows.

Thanks in advance

Federico

You will find Windows images are quite large to begin with, that's just a natural part of working with Windows unfortunately.
