Loan offered - ARLabs EPROM programmer

Hi all,

Yves's mention of arcade cabinets has reminded me that I have one of these gathering dust in my cupboard, that may be of interest to the hackspace:

It's the only EPROM programmer on the market that supports really obscure and ancient chips as well as current ones - I bought it in a moment of extravagance when it looked like I was going to have a rare opportunity to hack an original 1970s Space Invaders cabinet. (Never happened, sadly - the cabinet in question turned out to be more broken than anticipated.) The downside is that it only really works with a crusty old PC, because it needs a 25-pin serial port, and the software for it runs under DOS from a supplied boot floppy or CD (which is not *in itself* a barrier to running it on a new computer, but good luck getting your ROM image copied off a USB dongle or SD card while it's booted into DOS).

Since I'm not likely to be using more often than once a decade myself, I'd be happy to long-term-loan it to the hackspace if there's interest. I can also throw in a cheap plasticky UV EPROM eraser :-)

Oh, ok - I see you already have a UV eraser! sorry.

Probably got an ancient laptop somewhere, but a USB to serial adapter, a 9-25 way adapter and a VM running dos (and several hours of fiddling!) might work...

We have some crusty old PC, but I'm not sure it's _that_ crusty.

Well I could loan my 386 I suppose.

But these days, even a Pi Zero should be able to emulate a crusty old
PC fast enough to jiggle a fake serial port strapped on the back of
the attached fake Arduino ;)

I use the ARlabs programmer all the time on an old windows machine. If you put the file in the correct folder it will load just fine from Windows. Also will work with a newer Windows machines if you use a Parallel Port PCI Express Card. Can't use a USB adapter.
