Hello OVMTB! Lots of thank yous, and good info about our Flagstaff race below, but first...
The Mock Race out at 24HOP was what I consider a huge success, and hopefully you thought so too. Our riders went out on a preview lap and then lined up in their ACA categories. Trying to beat the heat, we did have everyone out on the course at the same time and fortunately I didn't hear any issues or complaints about the amount of traffic on the course. Thank YOU (#1) riders for being friendly about passing and being passed. True to racing most riders had a good day, but it wasn't 100% success stories. Some riders took a tumble, and others had tire or mechanical issues. It's all part of participating in mountain biking. The riders that did have issues handled it with grace and without any undue drama which tells you quite a bit about our riders this year!
Our parents came together to set up a pit area then cook a huge breakfast for everyone in attendance. No one left hungry; Thank you (#2) Kendra and Dawn for cooking pancakes, the Nunez family for cooking bacon and all of the other families that brought food and your help.
A huge THANK YOU (#3) to the Oro Valley Bicycle Oracle location who came out and provided Neutral Support; we kept them busy and they kept our riders going!
Also a huge THANK YOU (#4) to the ORO Valley Bicycle Sunrise location who provided some really great giveaway prizes including several pairs of socks, 6 pairs of gloves, and a really nice Specialized Prevail helmet. We've never had a bike shop, let alone two bike shops kick in so much support for the mock race. Both shops help our riders, coaches, and their families throughout the year so if you have any bike related issues please consider them and tag them in your "appropriate" social media posts. Not the posts about Bigfoot and the Yeti....
Our Chipotle fundraiser is this week on Aug 27th from 5-9pm so stop by and get some good dinner. Make sure to show the flyer when ordering, or use the 7KP8WHC code when ordering online for pickup. Thank you (#5) Katie for setting this up!
Now that everyone has their team kits, we've set up to take our team Photos on Sept 4th at 5:30PM at Big wash. I'll put a reminder on TeamSnap, so you've got time to get a haircut and take care of those manicures if needed.
If you haven't had the chance, please go ahead and get your riders registered for the Races they want to attend. Start by filling out the Google form
here and then I'll send you instructions. Trying to have everyone registered by this Tuesday if possible.
Flagstaff race- here is a link to the Arizona Cycling Association's page for the Flagstaff race:
Flagstaff ACA race You'll find ALL of the race info there, including an overall schedule, start times, lap counts, and POV video of the entire course.
Sign up Genius will be coming out this week- note that in addition to food items, there is a spot to let us know if you'll be camping in a tent or bringing an RV so I can estimate how much space we'll need. And prepare yourselves, the league has to fit all of us into a limited area, so it'll be 'friendly' for sure.
Here is approximately what race weekend looks like:
Friday-Saturday:
Campers and riders arrive to venue. We are staying in the carnival overflow parking lot
Google knows whereAll of our activities are based at the camp area Friday and Saturday. but you are welcome to go walkthrough the pit zone and check it out!
3:00pm All riders meet at the campsite, ready to ride! We'll hand out OVMTB shirts and Race number plates then get prepped for our Pre-Ride
4:00pm Riders split into your race categories and we head out on a 1 lap preride/sight lap.
Approx 5:30pm team dinner setup. Again this is approximate depending on the preride and if folks are ready with the food items they brought
5:45-7pm team dinner and hanging out
7pm quick rider and coach meeting
After 7pm riders and families are free to continue hanging out or ?
If they are racing, I'd recommend having your riders back to their charging location by 9pm. They'll do better Sunday with a good night's sleep.
Sunday:
6:45am Pit Zone Setup, we'll need some parent volunteers for this
For every category- Plan to arrive to the pit zone 1 hour before your race. This allows about 20 minutes to chat and make sure everything is ready, a 15 minute warm up ride, then going to staging 20 minutes before your race.
8:00 a.m. Middle School Boys Race (example, arrive to pit zone at 7am, coach led warmup ride at 7:25, leave to staging at 7:40)
8:45 a.m. Middle School Girls Race
9:30 a.m. First-Timers Race
10:30 a.m. High School Boys Varsity/JV1 Race
11:00 a.m. Middle School Awards
12:00 p.m. High School Girls Race
1:30 p.m. High School Boys JV2/Freshman Race
3:30 p.m. High School Awards
Last item, because this got email really long.... thank you (#6) for sticking with it!
There is a really cool pump track and outdoor bike park area directly adjacent to the race venue. While kids on bikes is what we're all about, I will warn you that getting injured while riding the pump track is a very real possibility. Last year one rider crashed on the pump track and got a concussion about an hour before his race, so he couldn't race. Other riders went down and got scrapped up. I won't tell you that riders can't ride the pump track before your race, I'll leave that up to the parents of each rider to decide. If you do, please make sure they are careful. Don't want all of your training so far this year to be applied to just watching others race.
4.5 practices to go till race day, let's ride!!
