Hi Gents

I was quoted just shy of R10k for Bilstein shocks for the Ranger, only for the front two. Fitment and alignment included.

2 questions:
- This sounds expensive, or am I just out of touch?
- If you replace the front two, should the back not also be replaced?

Any recommendations for other options?

Cheers,

Jean

Also check Monroe's. They come from the same factory as Bilstein. Tough Dog also popular.

hi Jean ,
I just bought 2xrear  bilstein OE replacement  for my wife;s nissan xtrail tekna 1.6 dci 4x4 .
The cost was +- R1500 each .; supplier was Goldwagen in PE .
Our private mechanic will replace them .at nominal labour rate .

Jean , for my colt 4x4 bakkie i have used KONI shocks made in holland ; (the agent in boksburg quoted me recently +_ R12500 for the 4 shocks with the wheel alignment  for replacement new oners ).
The KONIS are adjustable HIGH/ med/ min ; I have used them to great service up until now including the trip to moz , zim and botswana in 2024 ; total 9917km's towing a  caravan of +_ 800/900 kg  gvm.

But i think the OME (old man emu ) have a "brand 51" that also work well and  on compression and rebound dumping... i dont know who is the agent .

I believe one  cannot compromise on shocks as a minimum if you travel to places in moz , zim . bot , zambia ,etyc  roads ; some places  are bad in my experience ...

jean , sorry forget to share with you ; the bilsteins come with a spec for oem replacement (B4 ) ; then a B6 and B8 ;it seems for higher performance ? i dont know but it seems something to do with increasing "performance spec" ...? ie from B4 up to B8 ?? ? ...
Not sure ....

Have you contacted Mikem for a quote.  They did all my Prado Bilstein serviceable shocks 10 years ago.  Been serviced twice in 100 000km.  Lots of that on wrecked roads.

Yeah I have also used Darrel at Mikem and I'm very happy with the product.

They are in Alberton now.

I only used Koni shocks on my Landy for the last 400,000km or so.
Been through 2.5 sets in that time. They used to be cheap, nothing special, just well made and designed - but as their reputation grew so did the price.

For long term abuse, best to spend on something that's quality. For a month a year use most 'brands' will work if your kind in the way you drive....
