Subject: Update of Guédry & Petitpas Reunions

Bonjour Cousins,

Now that we have finalized some plans for our upcoming Guédry and Petitpas Reunions, I want to let everyone know the information so you can make your plans.

The Grand Réveil Acadien (GRA) has again been postponed from October 2021 until the second week of October 2022.  This nine-day celebration across south Louisiana requires significant expense and coordination with several towns and parishes.  There was concern that some towns and parishes may not yet be ready to commit resources at this time.  Also, there was concern that attendance would be low due to the Covid situation in Canada and some parts of the U. S. which could affect folks ability and desire to travel in 2021.

Because of the postponement of the GRA to October 2022, the Guédry, Breaux and Hébert families have decided to postpone our major Guédry-Breaux-Hébert Reunion from 4 October 2021 to Saturday, 8 October 2022.  We want to ensure that our families from throughout the U. S. and Canada will be able to attend.  We have again reserved the Rayne Civic Center in Rayne, LA for Reunion.  Except for the date, all of our plans for the Reunion remain the same.

We will still be two years out from the 2024 Congrès Mondial Acadien (CMA) in south Nova Scotia so we should not impact attendance for that event.

The Guédry, Breaux and Hébert families have added a more local reunion for Saturday, 23 October 2021 at the St. Bernard Catholic Church Hall in Breaux Breaux, LA.  It will be from 9:00 am until 1:30 pm.  As we have done in the past, this Guédry-Breaux-Hébert Reunion will be FREE to all attendees and open to everyone wishing to come.  Lunch will be provided.  We will have a very loose agenda so folks have time to mingle, meet cousins and exchange information.  Breaux Bridge is in historic St. Martin Parish, LA and sits along Bayou Teche with its beautiful meandering stream and live oaks along the banks.  The historic St. Bernard Catholic Cemetery is next door to the Hall with graves dating from the mid-1800s.  The town of Breaux Bridge is named after Pierre Firmin Breaux - a founder of the town and patriot of the American Revolution.  Many Breaux and Guédry families descend directly from Pierre Firmin Breaux.

We hope to visit with everyone on 23 October 2021 and 8 October 2022.

Marty

Hello,
I am a direct descendant of Joseph De Goutin Bellechasse and Marie Jeanne Caron.  Joseph's parents were Mathieu De Goutin and Jeanne Thibodeau from Annapolis Royal, Acadia (Nova Scotia).  I hope your events are wildly successful.  I live in Western Canada and I still can't cross the border, so I won't be coming, but I'll be celebrating with you in spirit.

Sincerely,
Heather Morison Hallett

Heather

I am quite familiar with Joseph de Goutin.   He was the first Acadian to arrive in Louisiana and very likely was responsible for most of the pre-1785 Acadians coming to Louisiana. He was closely related to three of the four families that arrived in Louisiana in 1764.  Interestingly, he is the parrain (godfather) on a couple of baptisms of that group registered in St Louis Cathedral.  I believe his marriage certificate is also at St Louis Cathedral.  He was also related to Acadians in several of the other groups of Acadians coming to Louisiana.  There was communication between Acadians deported to various Atlantic colonies and to France and it is believed that he encouraged  his relatives to resettle in Louisiana.

Stephen White does a superb one-man presentation dressed as Joseph de Goutin.

Thanks for your note

Marty

Hi Marty,
Thanks for your reply.  I have written a book about this branch of my family so I have used all the sources you mention.  I didn't know if Joseph was forgotten in Louisiana or not.  I know I am related (by marriage) to Landry's, Carons (DNA match), Thibodeaus ditto, Lalande, D'Alcour and de Vesins.  Joseph's granddaughter Adelaide married a Scotsman on 14 March 1820, in Matanzas, Cuba by the name of Robert Morison.  I am descended from  this couple.
Hopefully your 2022 reunion will be a blessed success.  If anyone ever enquires about the De Goutin family,  I am happy to help.

Bon Fete!
Heather Morison Hallett

Do you have copies of your book for sale?  If so, what price are you asking?
