Are there no longer 2 flights of 4 teams per division section?

We are debating whether to stay with groups of 4 or switch to considering them one group of 8.

The original assumption was that comparing teams in one group of 4 to the teams in the other group of 4 would be unfair because they don't play each team the same number of times. But that was an assumption, and after some analysis, many of us are convinced that this is not as big an issue as we assumed.

Now it has been argued that the groups of 4 can cause the second best team to be excluded from the playoffs and/or can cause the 6th & 8th worst teams to be relegated instead of the 7th and 8th. So we are considering treating them as a group of 8 instead.

The decision is not final yet.

Thanks for all the work and thought put into this Jeremy.

There is no perfect system with a section of 8 teams. In this sized group, there will always be some teams who have to play the points leader twice and other teams who do not. Similarly, some teams get to play the lowest team in points twice while others do not. There is a definitive impact on the standings whether you split to a 4/4 setup or leave it as one group of 8. Neither is inherently more "unfair" than the other.

The only way around this is to mandate groups of 6 across every section, but that does not seem viable.

Going back to groups of 6 is always an option. That has been mentioned, but I don't think we're ready to give up on groups of 8 yet. They have a huge advantage for scheduling. When we had almost all groups of 6 with the occasional group of 4 or 8, the groups of 8 often created problems because of field sharing. With mostly groups of 8, the groups of 6 do not create any issues. Also, we have increased the movement of teams by 33%, so now a new team can find their proper level in 3 or 4 seasons, whereas before it would take a minimum of 5 seasons.

Nothing is written in stone. I think this board does a good job of listening to the membership. The switch to 8's was driven by some comments about good teams getting stuck in lower divisions for too long. But if the league wants to go back to 6's, then I'm sure we can make it work. But my 2 cents is that they work pretty well; we just need to tweak them a bit.
