Yes, OTAG was started in 1997 by people in the Santa Fe UU Church (I think....). I also think Patricia and I are the only two remaining members here from that original group. Ken Kurtz was also one, but he has moved to Michigan.

One of the things that Ken did was to strike up conversations with other hikers on the trail and often (especially in the case of young women) invite them to join OTAG. In those days I thought that was a bad idea as we often had 15 or more hikers at EP and we'd all hike together in the same large group. However, now I think that Ken had foresight! Perhaps we should try the same approach.

I don't think Otag is in crisis. Yes we can add new members but only if we know them. I don't think we need to advertise on social media ie Next Door. Right now, we have several hikers out of town. Vicki and I are tied up with a bathroom remodle. Last Friday, we had about 12-15 hikers. About 8-10 of us did the middle fork; the others the regular trail. Thats plenty.

I just met with a docent trainees today who's been here for 8 years and hikes with a meet-up group called the Burros on Wednesday. I invited him and he invited me, so maybe some  cross-pollination here.

I tend to agree with Tom - as one of the newer members most times we have a good size group;  A lot of travel and health issues maybe just all coming together - many are doing things that maybe we couldn’t do during covid.

I am off on a NOLS Italy trip Saturday - so see you in October and look forward to many hikes.

I agree with Tom. 

I’m sorry, I did not hike with OTAG recently, so my word may not be very important, but I hope to come back, and I care for the OTAG uniqueness. 

The OTAG unique culture based on Friendship makes us enjoying each other. What if unknown to us people would come to the parking lot and change entire chemistry between hikers? What if somebody from the neighborhood website would be insensitive, unfriendly, or even a rude person? 

I also believe that the Estancia Primera Club House parking lot is not a public parking place. Our group received a special permission to park here because the OTAG has a good reputation. I hope we are going to keep such reputation in the future.

Have them hang around outside REI to recruit hikers  and would-be hikers to join us, then lie slightly about our ages to attract those in their 60’s. Offer them the OTAG patch to sew onto their backpacks at the end of their provisional membership. Every one of us who mentions to others that we hike should be saying “I hike with OTAG”. We might make up an entertaining story about the arroyo that we are over. And a history of our gang activity.
