sshfs: remote host has disconnected

I have been using the following command to mount my server folders to local macbook (macoc mojave 10.14.6) without problem:

sshfs -o defer_permissions,cache=no,noappledouble,reconnect xx@xx:/mnt/data /mnt/data

But there was a time I tried another command combination:

sshfs -o auto_cache,reconnect,defer_permissions,negative_vncache,noappledouble xx@xx:/mnt/data /mnt/data

Then I was not able to mount the folders using any of the following commands:

sshfs -o defer_permissions,cache=no,noappledouble,reconnect xx@xx:/mnt/data /mnt/data

sshfs -o auto_cache,reconnect,defer_permissions,negative_vncache,noappledouble xx@xx:/mnt/data /mnt/data

sshfs xx@xx:/mnt/data /mnt/data

Especially, each time I got the feedback: "remote host has disconnected", and when I run the commands, my web browser cannot connect to the internet, and my finder window freezes. I am sure it is not the problem of my server. Can anyone help to solve this problem?

I am using:

SSHFS version 2.5 (OSXFUSE SSHFS 2.5.0)

OSXFUSE 3.10.3

FUSE library version: 2.9.7

What happens if you run ping to a remote host? To be honest it sounds like something is resetting your network connection if Safari doesn’t work and that’s unlikely to be OSXFUSE.

Is this a home network or a corporate environment?

I used either eduroam or iphone hotspots,  and connected to our server via Pulse Secure (a VPN). When I run the sshf command, my web browser and finder got frozen. I was able to ping 8.8.8.8, and was able to download files using wget. Once I used ctl+c to terminate the sshf command, everything went back fine.

At the same time, I found I was able to sshfs another server which does not require VPN access. Maybe it is due to the VPN?

If it works fine without the VPN and it doesn't work fine with the VPN, my guess is something about the VPN connection is not working nicely with something else. It could be that something in the VPN is not reacting to a long lived persistent SSH connection as a security issue. However it sounds like your next step is to work with whomever provides your VPN to figure out what it's doing :)
