Hello!
I'd like to install MacFuse and It asks me to disable some security option. To do this, I need to turn off my M1 (15.3.2 (24D81)) Mac. I keep pressing the button then enter in the recovery mode. But when I try to turn off that security option It keeps asking me to enter in recovery mode!

Maybe I did something wrong in the past to mess up this process?

Thanks for the help!

Hello Giovanni,

Did you try following the getting started guide on https://github.com/macfuse/macfuse/wiki/Getting-Started?

At which step does it ask you to enter recovery mode?

Best regards,
Benjamin

IMG_4389.jpegHi!
Thank you for your reply! To be honest, I just had an update and I can't find "Enable System Extensions…" button anymore. (Sorry, It's in Italian but layout should be the same!)

Anyway ... When I reboot in recovery mode I am not able to do the "Select the macOS volume you want to update the security policies for. Usually there is only one volume. Then click on the "Security Policy…" button. " part of the tutorial as It keeps me asking to ... boot in recovery mode!

that's odd!

The "Allow“ button in system preferences is only shown in system preferences for a certain amount of time after you try to load the macFUSE kernel extension. This is by Apple’s design. To make the button re-appear try to load the kernel extension again. You can do so by trying to mount a FUSE volume or running the following command in Terminal:

/Library/Filesystems/macfuse.fs/Contents/Resources/load_macfuse

Recovery mode asking you to boot in recovery mode is odd. This sounds like a macOS bug. Installing or using macFUSE has no effect on recovery mode.

Just to rule out common obstacles ...

  • macOS does not allow loading third-party kernel extensions when macOS is installed on an external volume. This is by Apple’s design and there is nothing that can be done from the macFUSE end about this.
  • macOS does not allow loading third-party kernel extensions in a virtual environment.

I’m not sure how to address the recovery mode issue. Reinstalling macOS might restore recovery mode to a working state, but it's hardly a practical solution.

Best regards,
Benjamin
