The hillshades used by OsmAnd show artifacts which appear to be issues at the tile edges. Horizontal and vertical edges show the issues. It looks like adjacent tiles do not have the same grey tone on the two tiles where they meet. See the example screenshot.

http://beta.map1.eu shows similar issues at tiles edges but it seems to use larger tiles so that the edge quality issues appear less frequently. Compare the spot from the OsmAnd screenshot with the same spot on beta.map1.eu.

However, http://www.opencyclemap.org/ with the Outdoors layer switched on does not show such artifacts.

Can better hillshade tiles be made available for OsmAnd?

For Norway at least this can be improved a lot. There are high quality DEM data available under CC BY 4.0 which means I can be used to make hillshades for OsmAnd.
The data is used to create the hillshading at http://mtbmap.no/

Really hope OsmAnd will make use of these data as they are pretty high quality. 10 by 10 meters grid with a height accuracy of ± 2-3 meters to ± 4-6 meters.

The "tile edges" are not a problem of the DEM data.
It is an OsmAnd problem, the hillshade tile creation or display (it is upsampled for higher zoom levels) has an error.

I hope they could correct this "problem" soon. I thought it was the DEM that was causing this but glad to know it wasn't.
