My setup is as follows:

1. Pixel 3XL (Android 10)
2. OsmAnd+ (3.4.8)
3. Default settings for OsmAnd+
4. Plugins (Trip Recording and Online maps)
5. Battery setting is NOT optimized for OsmAnd+
6. Battery saver is OFF
7. Adaptive battery is OFF

When I start a track, the recording starts normally. When the phone goes into sleep mode, the recording stops. So typically my track recording ranges from 300-400 ft. (length of time for the phone to go to sleep) regardless of the track length.

I can fix the issue by going into apps>OsmAnd+>Permissions>Location and set "Allow all the time". Of course this setting uses more battery. I would prefer to use "Allow only while using the app" setting to conserve the battery. But when I do, the track recording stops when the screen goes to sleep.

Is this normal behavior? Is there a way to utilize the "Allow only while using the app" location setting and have track recording continue while the screen goes to sleep?

Thanks

From my experience that happens if
  • you have the battery saver mode enabled — there's no way to override GPS sleep, it actually works but logs only once a few minutes or longer and it's by Android design
  • you don't add Osmand to energy monitor exceptions so it's not put to sleep
That's on Android 8.

This is expected behavior for any phone running Android 6 or higher.  When the screen is asleep, the operating system does not consider you to be using the app.  You have the ability to disable this behavior by disabling battery optimization for it, but be aware that data logging can be battery intensive.  Adjust your logging heuristics appropriately to conserve battery.
