Hi,

I usually don't use my tablet online but till now I found no other way to download hillshade and contour line data.
For the "normal" maps, there is a url where all maps are available for download.
Does such an url also exist for hillshade and contour line data?

Cheers,
Bob

Hi,

contour lines and hilshade data is a paid feature.
So there is no public download location. It is hidden in the app.

It doesn't matter whether you are a paying user or not. Other non-paying users could use it as well.

Since OsmAnd is a FOSS (Free and Open Source Software), it's more correct to speak about a "donation" more than a "payment".

Actually, one can decide to "donate" some money by purchasing the App (OsmAnd Plus) and the required Contour Plugin, but you can also get the same for free from the F-Droid market (don't worry, everything there is legal since it's all OpenSource: every software you find there is re-built from Source Code and checked against possible malware).

To do that, go to the URL: https://www.f-droid.org/ and install the F-Droid App in your device; then open it, perform the needed Repository update and search for "OsmAnd".
Two items will result:
  • OsmAnd~:  actually the last Nightly (development) Build that was created the day the official OsmAnd Plus was released (binary is the same as the commercial version, just the name changes).
  • OsmAnd Contour lines: the plugin required to dispaly contour lines.

As I said , getting the app and/or the plugin from F-Droid is legal, just consider that purchasing it, instead, you will help the OpenStreetMap Project going on ;)

Cheers,

Max

Hi Max,

I fully agree about FOSS and the philosophy behind it (everything I build is FOSS), but Osmand.net itself mentions for the several plugins/features "free" or  "paid". That's why I use the same terms.
And actually F-droid is breaking the OsmAnd philosophy, which only complies to having the full version if you compile it yourself, by offering a full-functional OsmAnd without the restrictions the OsmAnd team would like to see for a pre-build version. They request donations/payments to keep the project going and to pay for the servers. And for the rest of the incoming money: please keep it, it won't make them rich.

Hmm... but allowing users to download maps from a public server also  overruns the 7 maps limit for non-paying users...

Following your logic, this URL shouldnt exist as well?

Good to know, but doesn't help with my initial question...

That is different. The app doesn't call that a paid feature. It is a limitation in the Free app. Somewhere in the Q&A this url is even mentioned. It is just to stimulate users to move to the paid version (or donation version according to Max ;) ).
And yes: That url does exist. If you search through the source code you can find all urls. In fact it is the same url but with extra parameters.

Ok, I begin to understand that FOSS is a far more complex topic than I first thought....

And thank you very much for the source-code hint! I found the url, or to be correct I found out how to build a working url for a specific hillshade-map.
Now I feel like a mighty badass hacker ;-)
