Just thought I'd say hello and see if anyone was still monitoring this group.  Would love to find an active group...

Still here, but this is the most "active" group I know of in the area. If you find another one, let me know.

been searching around this morning and not finding anything, either PerlMongers or MeetUp groups.  Just logged into PerlMonks after a very, very long time.  Has the group started meeting in person again?  I know a lot of groups of all types all but shutdown (or did shutdown) over the last few years.

It's been awhile since I've done any programming myself, so I am wanting to get back into it.  I'm setting up with Strawberry Perl on a windows laptop and a couple other larger laptops with Linux.  I just installed Tk abd Prima modules on the Windows laptop.

I’d need to look back through the history to see. We met a few times pre-pandemic, was every few months at a bar or something like that. Post, I’m not sure..

There hasn’t been anything post pandemic as far as I know either. I fell out of doing Perl and being social just Before lockdown, but if someone wants to pick a place and a night I’d be down for a meetup again.

Hello Robert,

It also been a year since you posted here and that includes anyone else.  Is there any *tech* life left in Central Florida?

regards,

David

Tech? Yes. Perl? Sadly less than ever as far as I can tell.

I’m around but use Python more than Perl anymore.

I’ve started attending meetings with the Orlando Devs. Found them through MeetUp. They also have a website at https://orlandodevs.com/. Sadly Perl does not seem to be of much interest to them.  Personally, I’ve been rebelling against the universe and using Perl on several code challenge sites like Exercism, Code In Game, Code Wars and Project Euler.

I’d love to land a Perl job, but for now, I’m teaching myself C# and Unity.

I left Orlando in spring of 2019 to work at a bank in NC.
I volunteered my way into a project that was re-implementing a system that got too big for SharePoint.
I used Perl 5.8 on an old AIX machine.
It was in Yet Another Environment Where CPAN Wasn't an Option, which reminds me of a story I once started to tell @perigrin, but at the time I couldn't remember how it ended.
I've moved on to another job and my permanent home, which is not Florida, so I will likely not be making any meetings in the area.
Predictably, the latest job is a lot of Python.

Yea, I thought about learning python but just couldn’t bring myself to do it. I felt if I was going to have to learn something new from the ground up I’d learn a whole new industry as well.  That’s why I chose C# and Unity.  I thought I’d learn about game development and simulation. I might still pick up python because I kind of wanted to contribute to the Trac open source project.

But for now, I’ll stick with Perl because I like it and C#/Unity because it’s new and shiny.
