Hello,

I'm Birger from Germany. I just installed Openwisp2 using the ansible
method.
It runs, I connected my first device, I can configure it. But I like to do
more.

My questions:
- Is there a way to combine/group templates?
I would like to create profiles for different device types and group
configuration snippets.
Like having templates for different radios separated from templates for
SSIDs.
My goal will be to combine device profiles (hardware) with organization
profiles
(apps/functions, SSIDs, credentials).

- How can I find out, when a device last connected?
I would like to monitor my devices.

- Is there any documentation how to install freeradius?

- Is there any documentation how to install and integrate coovachilli as
captive portal?

- I see a lot of projects on GitHub. What are they for?
Is there any documentation on it?

Thanks for any feedback
Birger

No, it's not possible to combine templates, you can use separate templates and then choose all the templates you need when you configure a device.

Right now you can use zabbix, icinga and similar solutions.

No, you can refer to the coovachilli documentation for that.

Every project has a README that may help you understand what that module is used for, but it's not exhaustive.

Best regards

Thank you Federico for your Feedback.

So I would like to suggest two enhancements:

1. Profiles
Several templates may be grouped into profiles which may be selected
for devices. Users may use this feature to build hardware profiles for
different architectures and organization profiles with password/SSID/... templates.

Individual device configurations consist of a list of profiles and an additional
list of templates.

2. Device status "last seen"
Openwisp2 has the information, when devices tried to download a new configuration.
(I see the information in nginx.access.log. Couldn’t figure out, if this information
is tracked in database.)
Date and Time of last access are shown as "last seen" on the Devices page.

As I'm not a programmer (anymore), it is difficult for me to submit any patches.
But maybe you can give me a hint, where to look for in the code.

Thanks,
Birger

Thanks for the suggestions.

For point number 1, you may use template tags, it would work if you compile specific images for each major use case you have.
You can flag an image to have tags "free_wifi, wpa2_enterprise" and all the tags tagged with one of those will be automatically added then the device registers.

Hi Federico,

interesting news. I tried to get some information about the concept and found
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/openwisp/LdMRlmNNQD0.
That's great.

I tried to figure out how to set tags in the firmware image. Could you please
give me any hints?

Thanks,
Birger

My OpenWRT build environment has openwisp-config-0.4.5 from 3/3/2017
There is no "tag" in the lua-scripts, it is older than your announcement of working on this topic.

Try to examine newer version.

Figured out that tags are in openwisp-config 0.4.6 alpha
But I could not find any instructions, how to override 0.4.5 in my
openwrt build environment.

Do you have any hints how to do that?

Thanks,
Birger

The README explains how to install the latest build or how to compile it yourself or compile your custom image with it:

This is an example of how to configure tags on the OpenWRT side:

config controller 'http'
    option url 'https://openwisp2.mynetwork.com'
    # ... other options ...
    option tags 'tag1 tag2 tag3'

At the moment this takes effect only when the device registers, so if the tags are changed later it will have no effect.

There's also an issue about documenting this feature: https://github.com/openwisp/openwisp-config/issues/40

I already did that. But it did not upgrade 0.4.5 to 0.4.6alpha
Should I fully clean out my build directory?

Yes, check also the ordering of the feeds, it must be as indicated there.
