Hello everyone,

I'm currently trying to run a simulation on ansys Fluent using the mesh generated by  openvsp.

It would be really great to export directly the mesh and to run simulations, but, reading past conversation here, I understood that this is not so straightforward.
I noticed that the conversations about this topic are from some years ago, and I wanted to ask if, in the meanwhile, some other solutions were found.

I also tried to import the .stl to Ansys Workbench (in order to create the mesh with Spaceclaim) but i'm having problems also with this operation. What would be the best solution in this case?

I need to run a 3D simulation of a supersonic flow over a delta wing, and possibly extract a Cl/alpha curve. Since I'm a student I cannot use many software because obtaining licenses is a problem, so I would like to remain with Ansys fluent which has a student version. Did anyone tried with OpenFOAM?

Thank you,
Alessandro Bo

If you want to try OpenFoam, you can try it with FreeCad's CfdOF workbench. I never used it, so don't know how good it is to import a STL file and mesh it.

FreeCAD CfdOF workbench is brilliant! There's lots of YouTube tutorials showing how to use it, but basically, you go through the workflow in FC to create the OpenFOAM case. If what you're doing is relatively simple then you just hit run and then view the results in Paraview. If you're trying to do something more complex then you edit the OF case files as required. So your workflow would be roughly as follows:
- Export the STL mesh from VSP
- Import to FC and convert to a solid (https://www.xsim.info/articles/FreeCAD/en-US/HowTo/Create-a-solid-from-surface-meshes.html)
- Draw a big block around your part to model the fluid domain and subtract your solid from it.
- Set up boundary conditions and sim parameters
- Mesh with a fairly large mesh size around the outside and a fine surface refinement on your part with boundary layers (you can also create another block for volume refinement closer to your part)
- Run the sim and view in PV.
