Hi,

I am still new to using OpenRefine and am trying to figure out why my saved projects are not showing up in OpenRefine. I was cleaning data in a worksheet all weekend in a created project in the program, however, when I reopened the program, it wouldn't show my projects under Open Project. I've attached a screenshot of what it looks like. There is something up with it and I'm not sure why I'm not able to access my project. It is also now showing the other links in the left menu sidebar, such as Language Preferences or Import Project.

I've only had the program installed in my computer for the past month and haven't had this issue before. Do you know what I should do to access my projects?

Thank you.

Hi Joyce and welcome to OpenRefine

Can you provide a bit more information?

What version of OpenRefine are you running?
What operating system (Windows/MacOS/Linux) are you using?
If you click the "Browse workspace directory" link you see there, what folder opens on your computer (if any) and what files are in it?
If you are running on Windows or Linux, can you post any information from the terminal/commandline window where OpenRefine is running?

Some of this may not be relevant, but its a good set of information to provide when you have issues to help others work out what is going on

Thanks

Owen

This might be similar to what other users experience with a path naming problem.

Hi Owen,

I downloaded the newest version of OpenRefine about a month ago so I have version 3.4.1. I'm using a Mac with Mojave Version 10.14.6.

When I click on Browse Workspace Directory, it opens the metadata from my previous projects in an obscure folder under User, Library, Application Support, and then OpenRefine. The names of the folders are all numbers.

I found the metadata for a project that I'm currently working on and spent most of last weekend cleaning the data. Is it possible to recover the project in the case that I have to uninstall and then reinstall OpenRefine? I've saved copies of the metadata onto my computer so I can access it.

Thanks for your help.

Hi Thad,

I looked at the suggestion you gave, however since I am working on a Mac, I am not able to locate that file named "openrefine.14j.ini" I think that file only appears when on a PC. Do you have any guidance for working with Macs? I have Mojave Version 10.14.6 and the latest version of OpenRefine.

Hi Joyce,

1st thing is backup that directory (zip it all up and store it somewhere safe)

If you had a previous version of OpenRefine and then upgraded to 3.4.1 and had been working with some Excel or ODS sheets, then you might have hit upon this issue:

Do you think that might be the case?
If so, you can certainly recover by manually editing the metadata files as described in that issue... or use jq one-liner script as provided by Tom in that issue (on Windows, you will need to install Cygwin, or if you are skilled with Windows Subsystem for Linux - WSL (Ubuntu, etc.) then you can just use that and install jq and run the script.)

It's probably only a few metadata files that might have the 'sheets' field that is populated incorrectly.  As I state in that issue, it's just a matter of cleaning those up in the best way you think works for your skill set.

Thanks Joyce - that all sounds normal for an standard OpenRefine setup, so there's no obvious issue with that.
If, as Thad says, you take a copy of the entire Workspace directory, then you can safely uninstall and re-install OpenRefine. Once OpenRefine is re-installed you can restore the content of the Workspace directory

Thad's made some other suggestions related to problems after working with Excel or ODS - I'm not familiar with those issues but if that sounds like something that might be a cause let us know

Thank you both for your help so far. I copied the workspace directory data onto my computer and then uninstalled the app. I reinstalled it not too long after. I was able to open the program, however, when I open the program it still shows me the same screen as it did before and I am unable to open my workspace directory or saved projects. At this point, I'm not sure if it has to do with the program or my computer but I am seeking help through another source now.
