Unable to replace guillemets with spaces around them

Hi, I have many cells like this:

Incorporating music by Georg Anton Benda and Jacob Schuback « lost; see introduction and critical report » PHI « Movements 10–15 do not survive in any musical source; they were probably adapted. » PHI

- If I do value.replace("«", "xxx") then the values get found.

- If I do value.replace("« ", "xxx") (space after the guillemet) then nothing gets found.

- Same behavior if I use regexes.

- Same behavior in Google Sheets.

I tried inspecting these values with a unicode character inspector but that didn't reveal anything awry.

Any ideas?

I apologize, I discovered just after sending that these were hard spaces in the original data, but those weren’t coming through when copying and pasting. Not sure why that is or if OpenRefine could help, but I’ve at least managed to get things working on my end.
