All,

Slightly concerning, but I'm hope it's in-hand - the Rail Data Marketplace (https://raildata.org.uk) appears to be down at the moment.  Unfortunately, I don't appear to have contact details saved for the support team.

Can anyone confirm whether any of the APIs proxied through the RDM are still available?  This could well be a problem accessing the front-end, whereas HTTP requests for APIs are being served correctly... but being unable to even log in, I can't check!

I stopped receiving RDM push port data at 09:51. JSON LDBWS seems okay though.

I can't comment on any of the file-based products, nor the ones which push content to cloud storage offerings.

And right after I sent that, I started receiving push port messages again around 10:06:39.

Hi Peter
There was a message about platform downtime scheduled for 13th, albeit it only went up a day or two ago...

There now a "Down for maintenance" page showing, but it doesn't say whether it's planned maintenance, or unplanned maintenance.

I still keep wondering whether proxying everything through a single point is a good idea or not.  On the one hand, it brings economies of scale such as centralised authentication, but on the other hand, any outage has a very wide impact.  This is not a criticism!

Thank you - I didn't spot it as I don't log in to the RDM regularly as I don't need to!

I won't roll out my "maintenance notifications need to be push notifications that don't require logging in" argument again.

Apologies to anyone who was inconvenienced this morning. Hope that it is all sorted now.

There was a planned upgrade this weekend, although this should not have affected the data feeds, so I don’t know why Darwin wasn’t available. We will investigate on Monday.

I also take the point about notifications of planned maintenance which we will see what we can do to improve.

Have a good weekend everyone,

Jez

So, it turns out that every day is a school day.  RDM did undertake an upgrade on Saturday morning, and the site was down for a short period in the morning as a result.

Our explanation up to now has been 'this doesn't affect data feeds', but Saturday proved us a little wrong on that score.  For some technical reasons that my brain is too small to comprehend, when the RDM site is down, Darwin push-port in JSON, AVRO and XML formats are paused.  All the pushport data is held and then published when RDM is back on line, so nothing is lost.  This is specific to Darwin pushport right now because of the method of connection.  So my apologies once again for any inconvenience or confusion that this caused.

It also raises a question about notification about planned maintenance which we will work on over the next few weeks.  Clearly Darwin users need to be informed more clearly, and we will also look at how / whether we do more general notifications (without clogging everyone's inbox).

FYI, next planned maintenance will be toward the end of October (precise date tbc), with a release to allow the publication of the rail customer experience dashboard on RDM.  You heard it here first.

Apologies again.

Jez
