Hi all,

tl;dr how to map something "EMU805" to "80x-E" for BPLAN network links / TPS?

Still making sense of the TPS dataset. One thing I'm trying to figure out is how to map physical trains to model trains for kinematics calculations. As an example, this is a Class 80x on electric traction in TPS:

<modeltrain id="2643" name="80x-E" publicname="Class 80x Electric" desc="Class 80x Electric" [... nonsense ...]>
<tractionunit id="563"></tractionunit>
</modeltrain>

I noticed that this is actually the same as BPLAN. If you look at network links between Euston and Camden South Jn (CMDNSTH), I also see that same "80x-E" name.

In looking at the documentation for the NWR Passenger Train Allocation and Consist product I actually see that it has the BPLAN Timing Load but this is unsuitable for my use case because I also need data for future trains, as well as cargo trains.

So, what data would help me map a timing load/train schedule to a BPLAN timing load? Some are straight forward, some aren't (e.g "221AWC" is for specifically Avanti West Coast 221s, though of course AWC doesn't actually have any anymore).

I have a feeling the answer is another heuristic-based algorithm but if the data exists I don't want to spend an afternoon doing it myself.

Hi Sarah,
I spotted a train planner having a moan about this topic on LinkedIn last week, essentially stating that timing loads appear to be created on a whim on demand without properly reviewing what's already there. I get the impression that the dataset may tend towards collecting cruft without regular reviews.

The National Timetable Planning Rules are a fairly good read on relevant background detail for interpretation, and also details the process by which new SRTs may be created.

Not directly answering your question, but hope these may be of some help.

Regards,
Thomas Wood
