Has anyone had any success in applying for NESA data as an open data request? I have tried to do so and have been refused on grounds of not having a RISQS certificate.
I've been in touch with the FOI officer at NR but he was trying to get it out through as a normal request. Seemingly to hit a brick wall who names shall not be added here.
I am guessing that Peter has had success given the mapping on OpenTrainTimes, but I can also see that it is done so as a limited company. I tried using my business email after being told personal email addresses are verboten.
I can't see that my asking for read requests to svg files of the network is some kind of data risk, so was wondering what anyone could advise as to how to approach this?
Ultimately I'm trying to map out areas of the network, but in a better layout than is presented in the sectional appendix.

I believe it's a standard IT policy (not just at network rail). I was also forced to use a business email address for my digitised maps. I originally used my university student address and then asked them to change it later - but they also refused when I asked them to move it to my gmail.

NESA publications are also available publicly in PDF format if that helps?

Hi,

Oh, no, I used a business email address too, but the jobsworth I was facing was like the black knight from the holy grail.
Fortunately one of the FOI peeps there was also in the thread and took over with a dose of sensible.
Put of interest, what did you manage to glean from NESA? I was hoping to get signal and junction data as SVG, hopefully with some sort of distance data attached. Likely miles and chains...

The FOI team are great, glad they managed to help.

It's the same information from the PDFs but in a more easily searchable format. I mostly use it to map clearance capability data and validate mileages for locations (junctions, tiplocs, and line speed).

NESA does not contain signal information and had to do an FOI request for that in CSV format (although the lat/longs aren't super accurate). Too large to attach (8MB)

Hopefully it will let me attach a sample of the FOI signal data.

Hi Liam

If you need somewhere to put large files, I can get them uploaded to the Open Rail Data wiki.

Thanks Peter, I've sent a email with the signal and some other data that people may find useful.

Oh, that's great. Thanks so much for sharing.
I'm trying to put together some route learning material for my girlfriend who has switched TOCs and has a load of new routes to sign off.
I wanted to incorporate the data into something like a leaflet map for each route with linespeeds and junction info as well as signal and crossing info.
This should all help massively.
Thanks for the info.

The links below may be helpful. For more detailed maps, I'll have to create a login with an email address.

That's even better. It seems you already have accessed pretty much everything I was hoping to unlock.
I'll have a proper look at the links when I have the computer with me next.
Thanks again.

Hi Peter,

Did you have time to get them uploaded? I'm still interested in the signal data and it could be very helpful in a project of mine.

Kind Regards,
Juhani

Hi Juhani,

Hopefully you've received an email with the data attached. It's Open Government License.

I’m just waiting on a couple of queries about the license and update frequency before uploading them - but I see Liam’s emailed you directly.

Let’s hope we can get this data updated on a regular basis!
