Can a PnP machine work with loose parts?

I need pick and place for snap domes only. I see some machine photos that have a plate with a backlight that appear to contain tiny loose parts. Is it possible for a camera system to find a snap dome on a tray and pick it up? I would think backlight wouldn't be needed for a larger silvery part. 

I think I can make a sorting tray to get all the snap domes in the correct orientation (not upside down)

OpenPnP has support for loose part feeders. As long as there is reasonably good contrast between the snap dome and the tray background, it should work. No backlight is required (or recommended). The parts do all need to be correct side up. The only tricky bit might be if the parts need to re oriented rotationally is some specific way that is not easily visible with an overhead camera.

1: Your top is spherical, not flat, so you need to customize a special  nozzle.
2: You need to properly arrange your parts with a flexible vibrating disk.
