Hi all, this message is cross-posted.

An Oregon instructor is looking for OER on behavior management for an education course. We looked at the Open Textbook Library and OERCommons and didn't find what we needed. Any recommendations?

Thank you!

Hi Seyed,

I was going too fast last night! Here is more info about the course, pulled from this page: https://www.pcc.edu/ccog/ed/252/

Course Description
Equips educators with culturally responsive research-based strategies embedded within the positive behavior support framework. Focuses on fostering desired classroom behavior and optimizing instructional time for an enhanced learning environment. Skills for implementing strategies across various tiers of intervention, including school-wide, classroom-wide, and individualized support for students with intensive behavioral needs, are provided. Prerequisites: WR 115, RD 115. Audit available.

Course Outcomes
Describe the foundational principles and philosophy of positive behavioral support strategies, including and ensuring cultural considerations and diverse perspectives.
Define culturally responsive evidence-based instructional techniques that promote positive behavior and engagement, preventing challenging behaviors before they occur.
Develop and name corrective culturally responsive intervention strategies that address challenging behaviors while maintaining a supportive and positive learning environment.
Identify school-wide intervention strategies for promoting a positive and culturally inclusive school culture.
Explore critical and culturally responsive methods for collecting and analyzing behavioral data to inform interventions.
Develop culturally responsive communication skills for working collaboratively with educators, parents, and support staff in implementing effective behavior support.

I think Behavior Management can cover a pretty wide range of topics, so it might be helpful to know a bit more about the course, especially the goals, learning objectives, or even a list of key topics. That way, even if a complete OER text is not available, the group might be able to recommend individual modules, chapters, or resources that could be pieced together.

Thank you!

Good morning, everyone,

I was thinking along the same lines as Jeff and wondered if the initial query may have been referring to classroom management, which learner behavior is a part of.

The book "Teaching Methods & Practices: A Resource for Novice Teachers" by Jason Proctor from Online Consortium of Oklahoma has the first half dedicated to this topic, called "Managing Learner Behavior". It can be found here: https://open.ocolearnok.org/teachingmethods/. It is a simple CC BY license and can be used online or downloaded in PDF or EPUB.

Hope this helps! 🙂

I don’t have any OER options, But this is my second masters degree - Special education with a focus on behavioral management. So maybe this is an opportunity to find funding to write one?

Hello Anna,
Thanks for sending out this list.

Just a fine distinction as to what the instructor might have been looking for (if it is the person who I think asked for the resource)

Behavior management in education is different from Classroom management. Behavior management deals with the individual child who is having difficulty -- anger, acting out, causing disruptions, throwing things, lashing out, etc. Students who are on a behavior management plan are monitored on a daily basis with checklists and check-ins each day to see how they managed that day. They work with someone who can come and help if the student is totally out of control. This applies to any student, not just SPED students.

SPED students have modification plans in place along with a behavior management plan if necessary.

Classroom management is slightly different as it deals with the logistics of the whole class -- rules, processes, layout of room, what to do when students are off task, redirecting, transition times, gaining their attention, positive reinforcement, affirmations, creating that flow within a classroom that is conducive to positive learning experiences.

Behavior management is for those students that typically 'act out'   -- how can they learn to manage their impulses, anger, emotions, frustration, and fidgety body that cannot sit still for more than 3 minutes.

We have more students who exhibit anti-social behaviors and are not good at managing their impulses and emotions. So the more up-to-date resources are always welcome as our K12 students need more help in those areas. Social media is not helping and neither are those cell phones. What may have worked in the past, does not work as well these days. We have students who throw chairs and have incredible meltdowns to the point of having to clear an entire classroom while an intervention team goes in to help that student process their emotion. In the meantime the other students have to go to other classrooms while that is going on.  So plans have to be made ahead of time in schools as to which classrooms students go to when their classroom is cleared -- some may go to teacher x's classroom while others will go to teacher y's classroom.  The intervention team is composed of teachers, principals, counselors etc.

So thanks for sending out this list as some of these resources can be adapted in a tangential class I teach to give more information to my students as to how to work with students who lash out, especially students who are transitioning from business/industry to high school teaching.

Hi all,

Thank you to everyone who chimed in with helpful recommendations! Here is the roundup (long email ahead).

There was discussion about the difference between behavior management and classroom management. These are two distinct topics and the original question was about behavior management. An Open Oregon Educational Resources listserv member explained the difference:

"Behavior management deals with the individual child who is having difficulty -- anger, acting out, causing disruptions, throwing things, lashing out, etc.

Classroom management deals with the logistics of the whole class -- rules, processes, layout of room, what to do when students are off task, redirecting, transition times, gaining their attention, positive reinforcement, affirmations, creating that flow within a classroom that is conducive to positive learning experiences."

For behavior management, there is a promising open textbook in the pipeline with support from VIVA. Here's the abstract:

From Compliance to Co-Regulation: Revisioning Guidance and Behavior Management to Support Children’s Social and Emotional Development within Classroom Communities is an Open Educational Resource (OER) textbook that examines how to incorporate brain research and create supportive classroom communities for all children. The Community Model for Classroom Management, the approach shared in this textbook, shifts away from compliance-oriented management structures and instead advocates for using tiered systems of support to develop social and emotional skills using a problem-solving approach. Universal, strategic, and intensive supports are discussed and connected to the model. This textbook celebrates the unique strengths that children bring to early childhood spaces and shows how educators can work collaboratively to help all children successfully engage within these communities.

I also got two in-depth replies with lists of options:

I have done research for a professor around a similar topic but geared towards special education. For classroom management, I received three helpful suggestions:

We just had a team release an ECE classroom management course cartridge and set of videos, which is a heavy lift, but the transcripts might help in a remix:  https://alg.manifoldapp.org/projects/educ4740-d2l-clayton

AERO (Australia) has quite a few classroom management CC BY resources, particularly practice guides: https://www.edresearch.edu.au/guides-resources/practice-resources
