Is there a definitive list of languages that are supported in Open edX? I can see the full list at https://www.transifex.com/open-edx/edx-platform/dashboard/
But none of these have 100% of strings translated. Should I assume that the languages with 90% or higher strings translated are in a usable enough state?

There is no officially supported languages for Open edX. All translations are community-managed.

Ok, let me rephrase my question. ;)

Which languages that have been community translated are ready for use?

Hi Nate,

For example, French isn't on your list, but we are using it on cours.edulib.org and studio.edulib.org here in Montréal. Let me explain.

We had to add our own local translations because French from France uses different terms than French from Québec. Long story. But just to give you an example, in France they use email or e-mail while in Québec we use courriel. We had no choice but to fork our own translations. Maybe one day we will contribute back to Transifex and create a fr-ca or fr-qc instead of using fr.

In the end, it's a question of how much English are you willing to expose your users to. If something isn't translated, do you translate it locally or do you wait for the next community release from Transifex hoping it will be translated then?

Does everything needs to be translated? In our case, we translated what we could on the LMS side whereby the CMS side might still have a lot of English. But since relatively few users use the CMS compared to the LMS, it was a choice we made. And those who do use the CMS are able to understand both French and English. And we translate as we go along. Just tonight I translated a tons of strings from lms/djangoapps/certificates. And those were not difficult translations either.

It's an interesting topic, especially if you plan to run a multilingual site. In our case, we had to limit ourself to French because all our courses are in French and most of our students from Québec, Canada, France, Haiti and most countries in Africa are using French as their native or day to day language.

And you can always create a new language in Transifex (eg "fr_CA"), upload existing files (eg "fr"), and edit them directly there :)

edX is running a few languages from Transifex, but honestly, they're mostly in rough shape. We're running es_419 (in decent shape, but frankly pretty inconsistent in how things are translated), hi, pt_BR (both horrible in terms of completion %) and zh_CN (OK shape, but I don't speak any Mandarin so I can't speak to quality). The ar project is also pretty active. But yeah you'd need to ask sites what languages they're running in and if they use the Transifex versions or not.
