Needless to say, there hasn't been any activity on this list for years, but I did want to provide an update on the openwebfoundation.org domain name.

Microsoft has been hosting the domain name records for years, and I've been the authorized individual to manage the domain, approve registration extensions, etc.

As of July 1, I'll be leaving Microsoft.  In order to ensure that the domain remains active, I was planning on transferring it to the Linux Foundation to manage.

Providing the community notice.  Comments are welcome.

Hi David!

Thanks for taking this initiative. Would a steward more focussed on the open web be more suitable? Both W3C and NLNet Labs spring to mind.

Cheers,

Simon

I vote for Hugging Face

They seem to be the active stewards who are carrying forward the spirit of the Open Web!

Mozilla seems like a reasonable candidate, given its legal orientation.

That said, besides persisting the domain which hosts the agreements, is there any other purpose/function for this?

What role/responsibility would the new owner/host need to commit to?

I'm +1 to Mozilla only because Canter throwing in hugging face ... that would be like banking on Yahoo! to hold this for us back in the early days of OpenID :-) /s

Thanks for the feedback, and for signs of life on this list.  :)

At this point, my time to get this transferred is extremely limited.  I've connected the Microsoft domains team with the Linux Foundation to get the transfer in place, and I'm confident LF will be good stewards of the domain.  The website itself will remain hosted on Google Sites, whose free tier has served us well over over the years.

Thanks again,

David

I hereby disagree

Non-profit orgs who live off of Search engine royalties are MORE beholden to their yearly paycheck, than a true leader and disrupter as Hugging Face

In the case of something about the "Open Web." I'd find more affinity in the "Fediverse" or "Atmosphere" communities, than anywhere else.

But Hugging Face has a cooler name...

Thanks for taking the lead on this, and — yes — great to see the return to life!

Given that Web Foundation paused ...  might this be a good time to revive this? Especially in these days of "Open AI"?

Just wondering
