Hi, I was wondering if there are any Catholic web programmers who might give me some advice on a project I'm trying to start.
Thanks

Thanks, I am not a techie, so I really appreciate this.I was wondering how hard it is to work with and customize clones of programs to integrate in a website.
For example, there are several on clone script.com that I see available.  However, I would like to make several custom changes or integrate them once the cloned code were available. Is it better (and easy?) to start from scratch?
Thanks

You're saying you got some code from the website script.com?
No, that can't be right, nothing there...

Wherever the code is from, starting from pre-existing code and making customizations (assuming this is open source code and the license allows that) might work OK if that's your only good option.

You have to be careful though -- it's easy to introduce bugs that are difficult to debug, and if you don't carefully track/document your changes, it will turn into a maintenance nightmare for someone else (or for you, in the future).

Good software will often allow for configuration without digging deep and modifying internal code.

I'm wondering if you mean "clonescript.com"—that looks to be a recipe for disaster, if you're trying to basically build the same website as someone else already has, or something like that.

What kind of things do you want to do on this website? What audience do you want to serve? We have to start from those objectives, then we could start talking about ways of building a website to meet those needs. Start on the personal level, then after that's sorted out, work on technical details.

Thanks! The question I had was whether these scripts could be modified easily, while not making a carbon copy of their sites, rather, to make it easy so one does not have to start from scratch. I can imagine this could mean an enormous investment otherwise.  The program would incorporate customized elements taken from scripts from both social media and "crowd" fundraising codes.  The goal will be to help church members to carry out corporal and spiritual works of mercy, especially in light of this jubilee year, and improve communication.

Will-
I think what a community of developers would typically like to hear (myself included) is exactly what is it you're after, and then we as professionals and hobbyists can duke it out and come up with the best solution for you.

This time you provided a bit more detail: You like the idea of sidebar widgets to help with fundraising, for instance.  Most any social media service like fundraisers, facebook, etc exposes a handful of ways to easily integrate with their service.  Take, for instance, GoFundMe.  If you want a widget, you can see:
and

It may or may not be straightforward with each various service, but there's usually a way.  And setting out to copy and modify an existing implementation may likely be excess overhead (and headache and not possible) whereas going straight to the source will provide the quickest path to resolution.

So, this doesn't really address your specific need, but hopefully it does guide your good intentions: think like a stakeholder, pose specific questions, and you'll get swarmed with responses and lively debate.

Good luck!  YBiC,
-Bronius
